What is it like to live in Gijon? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I lived in Gijon for 2 months. One in the summer and second in the winter. Gijon is a quite nice place near the beach, beaches actually (you can have your pick). Is not too warm in the summer and not to cold in the winter. For me, it was one of the best places to spend some vacation time. Nightlife is not so crazy however there are loads of museums and things to see during the day.

What is the student lifestyle like in Gijon?

I was never a student in that city however I have seen that many students choose nearby cities to study such as Oviedo and Aviles.

How much does it cost to live in Gijon?

Most of my cost there was supported by a friend but, from the scarce shopping that I made doesn't seem more expansive than most places in Western Europe. What I can say for sure is that the standard of life is higher than most regions in Spain.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Gijon? Is there any advice you can give?

I lived at the apartment of a friend, so I have no idea about that. Most people that I met seemed friendly, and I am sure you can find someone to share a rent with.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Food is amazing, they eat a lot of seafood, chorizo and jamon. My favorite dish is empanada.

What places would you recommend visiting in Gijon?

I recommend visiting Elogio del Horizonte, Universidad Laboral de Gijón and Campa Torres. All are high places where you have a superb view of different parts of the city. And the beaches of course, there are a few.

Is it good to eat out in Gijon? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

There are some bars where you can buy small foods for the price of one euro. Some of them are called Copas Rotas. Also, a nice restaurant where you can take out your girl for a nice diner is TOMMY MEL'S CLASSIC DINER. Is an 80`s look-alike diner, a bit pricey, but trust me, she's gonna love it. You can always split the note; )

Is the nightlife good in Gijon? Where is good to go?

I didn't do much party in Gijon, spend most of my evening walking along the beach or the park. For nightlife, I know there are a few nice places around the city hall or just follow the people that are going to party. The best place to party is in the middle of the street doing botellon with sidra, though.

What advice would you give future students heading to Gijon?

Enjoy your time there, there is no place like Asturias.
