Experience in Gent, Belgium by Steven
What is it like to live in Ghent? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Really beautiful architecture and buildings. The transport is really good organized and it's a good city to ride the bike. There are load of good parties, for example 'Overpoort' where most students go out. There is a street with all little clubs (most free entrance) with most commercial music, except 'Decadance' (entrance fee, but good techno music!, my favourite). Besides there are more places to go out, but this street is most common under students.
What is the student lifestyle like in Ghent?
For my opinion, students sometimes behave like animals. Because most student live all in the same neighbourhood with almost no families. Of course you have nice people as well! Loads of activities on the big scare during spring (Sint Pietersplein).
How much does it cost to live in Ghent?
- Accomodation: +/-300-350 €.
- Living: 250 € per month or more.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ghent? Is there any advice you can give?
It can be hard. You just need to walk around and watch notes on the windows that mention if they rent student rooms. Besides that there are a few agencies specialised for renting student rooms. There is also a facebook page 'Te huur: Kot in Gent'.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Loads of fast food and sandwichbars for daily food. Also loads of nice restaurants (more expensive). I really can recommend 'Amadeus' spare ribs as much as you can eat. Really nice interior and they have 3 of them in Gent.
