Why did you choose to go to Ghent, Belgium?

I chose to go to Ghent because I thought that Northern Europe would be the best place for me to experience as an Erasmus student, and I was right!

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I'm staying here for 6 months; the school gave me a budget at the beginning of this exchange.

What is the student lifestyle like in Ghent?

Ghent is definitely a city for students, you meet a lot of people and you can really have a great time.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Ghent to other students?

Absolutely yes, I'm studying at the Conservatory: it works very well and the place is awesome!

What is the food like?

Well, there are some typical dishes from the country which anyone should try, for example the Stoofvlees and the fries, but also things like chocolate and beer. Belgium is the best place to try this stuff.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Ghent?

I'm paying 250€/month, but it's just my fraction, because the flat actually costs 750/month, since there are 3 of us living here.

How much does it cost to live in Ghent?

Look out guys, Ghent is quite expensive in most of the places you will find, but if you ask the locals some advise you'll be safe!

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

The first official language in Ghent is Flemish (Dutch); it's a very difficult language to learn, and you cannot manage with it just by listening to people. However you can find several courses in the city.
Besides, the second official language is French, which is a hundred times easier, or you can just speak in English; everyone will understand.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Ghent from your city?

I'm from Northern Italy, so the easiest way I found to get in here was by plane and by bus (Flibco, a very cheap and cozy one) from Brussels to Ghent.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Ghent?

It depends on preferences: if you are a party lover, then you should spend a night in Overpoort, a neighborhood very close to the city center. Besides, if you prefer spending the time having some ribs and beers, you should aim to the center.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Ghent?

If you want to have some all-you-can-eat ribs you have to try De Gekroonde Hoofden, it's great.
Then if you want to try some real (real) Italian food you can try with the Pane e Vino. It's a restaurant/pizzeria run by an Italian guy. You can forget the other "Italian" restaurants ;)

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

You can visit the Cathedral, the Gravensteen Castle, the Beffroi and the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Ghent in the future?

Good choice guys, good choice ;)
