Experience in Ghent, Belgium by Kah Kheng
What is it like to live in Ghent? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Ghent is a lively city filled with a lot of international students, night clubs and bars. People are friendly and mostly can communicate in English although the core language is Dutch.
What is the student lifestyle like in Ghent?
Very enjoyable and fun. Mostly students in the mid-20s.
How much does it cost to live in Ghent?
Depends on the location, can vary from €350-800 for a student room, food price normally ranges from €10-€30 but you can get as cheap as €4.5 in a Turkish restaurant like kebab, etc.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ghent? Is there any advice you can give?
It’s a bit difficult to find a room as most of the landlords would prefer Dutch-speaking tenants. But you can still find a lot of nice student housing at reasonable prices. Tips: lookup for an Erasmus group or page, you can find more information there!
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is mainly western food, potatoes are the main carbohydrates here. Sometimes people eat pasta, sandwich and soup as well. My favourite dish is the Flemish stew (stoofvlees) with chips. Do check out kapsalon as well!
What places would you recommend visiting in Ghent?
A kayaking tour around the city of Ghent is quite nice. Sometimes I like to visit Blaarmeersen for a picnic or beach volleyball. Ask Google for more recommendations.
Is it good to eat out in Ghent? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Ghent has a wide variety of food ranging from Asian to
Western. I personally like to cook at home (it’s much cheaper). My favourite sports are badminton (with ESN club), hiking and swimming.
Is the nightlife good in Ghent? Where is good to go?
There are tons of students bars near Overpoort. Vooruit is also a good choice to chill out and have some Belgian beers (Duvel!).
What advice would you give future students heading to Ghent?
Bring more layers, a raincoat, learn how to bike and some basic Dutch.
