Experience in Gent, Belgium by Paloma
What is it like to live in Ghent? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It's a small city, perfect for students and Erasmus. It has a river and lots of channels. You'll take sunning shots from scenery landscapes.
What is the student lifestyle like in Ghent?
Awesome, full of events and parties. Best techno and house music.
How much does it cost to live in Ghent?
Be prepare to spend money. You can live for 300€/month (a shared apartment). The prices of food are not that expensive, it's just that you have to buy different stuff in different places. But won't eat meat, fish and other expensive stuff if you don't want to spend a lot. Go to Delhaize and Proxy. For going out, don't worry if you are a girl. Go straight to Overpoort.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ghent? Is there any advice you can give?
Not at all. Do it once you've arrived and share an apartment! Just call the numbers you see on the street and ask.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Actually haven't tried a lot of local food. Ah, well, yes, French fries (great with sauces) and beer (top! ). Well, try the mosselen and vol Au vent and this stuff if you have money for a restaurant. Otherwise, do like me and find a Flemish partner! His/her mum will make delicious typical dishes.
What places would you recommend visiting in Ghent?
All the historical center, but really, visit everything (cathedral, market, castle... ). Patershol is the gourmet district, Citadelpark is good for reading and Blaarmersen for summer and picnics.
Is it good to eat out in Ghent? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It's quite expensive but has a really good quality. Don't really know the prices because normally my boyfriend pays.
Go to Patershol district and get lost over there: sushi, Indian food, Turkish...
Ah! Don't miss out the food places all along Overpoortstraat! A kebab at Snack tossi is delicious at 5:00 in the morning.
Is the nightlife good in Ghent? Where is good to go?
Super. Decadance, Point final, Klub XIII, l'Étage.
What advice would you give future students heading to Ghent?
Hang out with Flemish, don't focus on Erasmus people. Party a lot and take advantage of studying at one of the best universities in Europe. Enjoy, enjoy and enjoy!
