Why did you choose to go to Ghent, Belgium?

Due to the highly praised university, UGent, and because I wanted to stay in a city with water (with a river or next to the sea) near the center of Europe (Benelux, Germany, France... ).

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

5 months, receive 1250 euros... about 8, 33€ a day. Can't really do much with it,

What is the student lifestyle like in Ghent?

Normal. There are parties almost everyday in Overpoortstraat. The studies are not that easy but it gets done.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Ghent to other students?

Sure! The city anytime!

What is the food like?

Super expensive. Especially if you come from a low income European country. Everything costs almost 2 times more than in your country. The restaurants are really expensive but the student restaurant (for UGent students) is amazing! Flemish stew, brussels sprouts, the fries, the chocolate... everything delicious.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Ghent?

Yes. Especially online. At times it felt like everyone is trying to con me.

How much does it cost to live in Ghent?

Without the rent, from 300-400€ a month. Cheaper if you're vegetarian and don't go out or travel around much.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

No. The language is incredibly difficult! But there are beginner courses and, despite being a pain in the ass, they pay off. You end up speaking the basics and being able to communicate with people who don't speak english (rare! ).

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Ghent from your city?

Plane to Brussels, then train.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Ghent?

It depends on what you like. For me, the center, near Sint Jakobskerk was the best place.

If you like to party especially crowded with a lot of drinks, go to Overpoortstraat.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Ghent?

The student restaurants and the Frituur Hut in Overpoortstraat.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Ghent in the future?
