Why did you choose to go to Ghent, Belgium?

To be honest it was because I was late with my applications and I only had two cities to choose from.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

It was about 5 months and I received 250€/month.

What is the student lifestyle like in Ghent?

I was a student at Hogent and we had a lot of classes which was why everybody was very busy with school stuff. But in general, everybody was very motivated to go out, to experience the city and to travel around Belgium. Everyone was "all in" which means that we went out up to 4 times a week. There are many many bars, clubs and pubs to discover, so it never gets boring!

Would you recommend the city and the University of Ghent to other students?

I would definitely recommend Gent as an exchange city. Depending on how many credits you need to pass the semester your studies can get very time consuming (I needed 30 credits=9 subjects=15 presentations+exam at the end). But the city is extraordinary beautiful and there is always something to do. All in all, it was the best experience I've ever made until now.

What is the food like?

Very unhealthy.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Ghent?

I was offered a room at the student home by erasmus. Btw. living there is the easiest way to get to know people.

How much does it cost to live in Ghent?

I'd say including my rent and excluding shopping I spent 500€/month. As I'm from Germany, food costs are comparable. For going out etc. you often get student discounts.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

You can attend dutch classes but I didn't because I couldn't receive credits for it. But generally, literally everybody can speak English.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Ghent from your city?

As I'm from Germany by car or train.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Ghent?

Overpoort (TAMTAM, club 13), Charlatan, Hot club (Jazz), Rock circus (pub) and many more.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Ghent?

Not really.. mostly food stands to have a snack. And try the waffles!

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Many churches, museums, go to Blaarmeersen beach! And you should definitely chill at Graslei.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Ghent in the future?

Have fun! I loved it. And don't forget your raincoat.
