The introduction

I want to tell you about my German lessons and, well, German in general. so, it was just a feeling that I should have done some German  so that I would be more pleased about my decision and willing to obtain another language. You know, I have been wanting  to know German for a long time now and finally I decided to go ahead and make a move and study German with a personal tutor. Then I heard about this academy and I also got registered in that academy to study further German and soon everything went well. I started to get to know some basic stuff quickly as I had some background. I mean, I knew some very basic things in German that I used to read online, where they had these German online lessons and I just read them and did some exercises, but not so much. However, it had really helped me in bettering my skills of German in a short period of time, if you want to know the truth.

Well, I have always wanted to learn German, since I was a little, but somehow  I didn’t start learning it. However, there was this group of my classmates, who had this German course and they studied German while I was studying English. Now that it’s been some years after that, I finally decided to study it, because it’s really necessary to know German, what’s more, I study medicine and everyone knows that knowing German when you want to become a doctor is a great thing to do. Well, I want to know it really well and I’m doing my best, I guess, because I do so many things, including reading some stuff in German, although I have just started learning it. I mean, it’s been just a couple of months, I guess, it’s been 5 months since I started studying that language. Of course I did some things on Internet with online learning and stuff like that, but it was not much and I guess, I had already forgotten many things about it. So, I went to this personal tutor, who really knows her job and I’m very pleased, that I went to her.

German Academy

At the same time, I registered in some German lessons. That was conducted by this large organization called AIESEC and they called it German Academy. There was this girl Saskia, who was really cute and she was from Germany and a native speaker, you know, and she taught us German for a couple of weeks. We had language lessons three times a week and it was pretty intense. I mean, she taught us many things during those weeks and I’m really glad that I registered on that course. However, the lessons were at 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and that was not a very good thing for me, because I had my German tutoring lessons on Mondays and Thursdays and it kind of matched on Thursday lesson , and I could leave ten or something like that minutes early this German Academy and rush to my German tutoring lessons , because it needed something like 40 minutes at least. Besides, 7 and 8 p.m. is a rush hour, I guess, because everyone just finishes their jobs and everyone is going home or somewhere to their friends’ houses or somewhere to meet their friends or something like that and there are always a lot of people around waiting for the train (I usually take metro) and it’s always crowded and it’s just really hard to get on the train when that happens, you know. Fortunately I’m not that big or something like that and I can kind of sneak on the train, while those big guys and others can’t. Still, it’s annoying and uncomfortable, of course, especially when you’re in a hurry and don’t want to be late. Well, I was sometimes late because of that, of course, and good thing that there are these phones and messaging and all the other stuff, so that I could message my teacher that I would be late and she wouldn’t worry or if she hurried, she could just be calm and not rush into the language center so that she wouldn’t be late or something like that.

German tutor

Well, my German lessons were great, I can say, because, you know, when you really want to do something, you are pretty excited because of that and you do it with all your heart, and stuff like that. So, I was really excited about starting to learn German and I was pretty motivated and determined to study this language and everything, so that I did my best to remember all those new words and rules and do those exercises well, so that I would feel pleased with my progress, and, at the same time, I wanted to learn this language soon. Well, of course, one can not learn a new language very soon and, if you ask me, one can never learn any language as a whole, I mean, even our mother tongue is not familiar to us, if you want to know the truth. We don’t know it as we should and we will never learn it in our whole life, I guess, not to mention some foreign languages, which are not our mother tongue, of course. 

German teacher at our school

First of all, there was a teacher in our  school, who was a teacher of German language and, when I went to that school after elementary classes, this class was divided into two groups when it came to studying foreign language and, while most of them studied English language, there were three classmates, who were in a German language class. Imagine that opportunity that I had if I studied German language with them from that time! I mean, it would be just awesome, you know, studying German language from the fifth grade and I would be studying it for 8 years already until finishing school! That would have been just great. Though I know that saying, that you can’t really study German, however, I can say, that no one can really know a language not in its full potential, rather than half of it, if you want to know the truth. One can not even know their native language that good, that they may say that they know their language. There are so many words and phrases and stuff like that in every language, that we don’t use, that you can’t even imagine, if you want to know the truth. And there was this great Akaki Shanidze, who studied Georgian language and even he said, that he didn’t know Georgian language that well, so, what can I say, that means that I don’t know my native Georgian language at all, I guess.

Anyways, my parents decided that I had to be in English group, because I was already studying English language at that other school and, besides, no one thought that German would be somehow useful for us, I guess. Well, maybe that was why there were only three students learning German there. So, that was it and I continued studying English there, too. You know, there was just this one teacher of German in the whole town and no other schools had that opportunity of having a German teacher there, so that my opportunity was badly missed, I can say. I always tell that to my parents. Because now I study German language and it’s pretty hard now, because I have all these medical stuff and things like that and, at the same time, I want to learn German fast, however, everyone knows, that you can’t really study languages fast, because then you forget something, or just don’t understand something and things like that, you know. And if I had started learning it just when I was at school, I would have been very good at German language, I’m sure of that! Well, now I can’t really change anything that’s in the past, however, I can do my best now and study it as I should and know it and use it and everything. It’s just that, the thing is, there’s not much time now, as it would have been some years ago. You know, then I had plenty of time,so that when I had a free time I just used to watch many films, and by “many” I mean many, many films. And, you know, each film lasted something like at least one hour, of course, and imagine now how much free time I had then. And, I studied very well at school, I must say. I had all those homework and stuff done and I knew everything they gave us to study.

Deciding to study German at last

So, after graduating from school, I wanted to study German language, however, I got to’ university and started studying medicine and stuff like that and then I didn’t think about learning German for a little time. Then I wanted to study it again, because my groupmates were studying it and they would bring those books and notebooks and do the exercises there, because then they had German lessons that day and stuff like that, you know. So, I really wanted to study it, too. However, some time passed and I was just willing to study it and not doing anything about it.

Then I started asking around and this one friend of mine was also interested in studying German language, so that we searched for some options of where we could go and have some lessons. You know, there are personal tutors, to whom you may go and sit there and study different subjects and languages and stuff like that. So, we found a kind of good one, it was nearby to my apartment and I was glad about it, of course, and the price was reasonable, too, we just had to see whether we liked her lessons or not. Well, unfortunately, she had this group already full with my friend and her other friends, and I didn’t really know whether I could go there or not, because I was waiting for my university schedule to be announced, so I missed that chance of studying German with friends and then I just didn’t look for another German tutor for some time.

It was later in winter last year, that I noticed something about learning German language just near my apartment and, well, at first I thought, that it wouldn’t be good or anything, I don’t really know, why I thought that. However, soon I realized, that it was a good opportunity, and, while it was just nearby my apartment, I would not get lazy not to go to the lesson and I would go there regularly, no matter what kind of weather there was or something like that, you know. So that, I wrote to them and they told me to go and speak with them and that they would arrange a lesson with their German teacher and then I would decide whether I wanted to study German language there or not.

And, so, it was in the middle of February or something like that when I went to those German lessons and continued going there, as the teacher was pretty good and nice to talk to and she knew her subject well and I really liked it. And, besides, it was personal lessons, I mean, it was just me and my teacher and it was great sitting there alone, because we did many things during the lesson and we checked many exercises and stuff like that, you know. Well, it was just some time till the summer and then in summer we had a break, of course, so it just came out, that I just studied German for 5 months, I guess, or something like that. To tell you the truth, I had German lessons twice a week and it lasted one hour. Well, that was pretty much enough, if you want to know the truth, however, sometimes I couldn’t go to the lessons, because I had some things at the university or there were some problems about the time and stuff like that, well, those things happen, of course, and everything can’t be avoided, so that I had to miss some lessons, however, then I used to do next exercises and if I didn’t have any questions about them, I would just present them to my teacher and we would check them and everything. So, it all was just fine and we finished this one book of A1 level pretty successfully. Now I’m wondering, whether I remember all those things or not, because I really haven’t had a time to revise all those tasks, however, I watched some videos and read some things and stuff like that during this summer break, you know. And my sister brought this CD ROM from Germany that she studied there in Germany, you know, they have German lessons there, too, however they study all the other subjects in English. So, there was this e-book there and I just did some things and read some things and stuff like that, you know. It was pretty good book, if you want to know the truth, however, it was kind of uncomfortable to study from that thing, because I had to zoom in and zoom out all the time, you know. However, it was still good and I kind of enjoyed it. well, I’ve already mentioned, that I had completed this other book of A1 level and this book was kind of revision and stuff like that, if you want to know the truth.

Studying German language

Well, everything was just great and I had other books, too, about German, and in German and about learning German and stuff like that. I was just reading those stuff and printing them and reading and everything. I put a lot of effort in it, if you want to know the truth. However, I could do much more, I guess. I had this book found on Internet called “Basic German” and there are grammar things explained clearly in English and then there are exercises in it, too, so that you can practice what you have read and stuff like that, and it’s a pretty good book, if you want to know the truth. I have learned many things from it and I have also improved my German with the help of it.

You know, you should know many words, so that it becomes easier to comprehend the language, I mean, when you know the words, you can get the idea of the sentence and when you don’t, you don’t get it at all, no matter if you know the grammar and the conjugation and stuff like that. Vocabulary is really important. Of course, that grammar is important, too, I’m not saying that it’s not, however, you should know that when you are a child and you study your language with the help of parents and people around you, you just don’t get those grammar lessons from them and telling you that it’s a Present Perfect and it’s a simple past and things like that, they just talk to you and that’s how you learn the language and then, when you go to school and stuff like that, there you study those grammar rules and everything, while you have some amount of words in your vocabulary and you can use them to understand everyone and many things around you, you know. I had these e-mails subscribed, where this guy sent me e-mails about learning German language and some kind of his “rules” about how to study German language and stuff like that, and he also had these lessons and audio and video lessons for it and I could listen and watch them if I wanted and stuff like that, you know, and it was pretty cool, I mean, I could use those things without any payment and they were pretty useful, if you want to know the truth. One of his rules was that you should not just study the grammar. I mean, he said, that you should study phrases and that’s how you will learn a new language easily. And that’s right. Because, I’ve already mentioned above and I will repeat, that as a child, we hear phrases and words and not the rules of grammar of the language , and that’s why we learn this new language pretty easily, I guess. So, that’s the main point in learning language pretty fast, if you want to know the truth.
