What is it like to live in Galway? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I have studied in Galway for the past 3 years and loved every single minute of it. There is a sense of Irish culture that you will not find in any other city in the world and the people are so friendly! However it is an expensive city to live in, rent can range from 340 to 490 a month (excluding bills). Saying that it does not take away from such an amazing city where there is something to suit every ones taste!

What is the student lifestyle like in Galway?

It's great. Galway is completely a student city. There are students everywhere and nightlife is always fantastic. If you're into sports or drama or art there is something for everyone. All the time there are student prices and deals omn in many of the local bars and clubs.

How much does it cost to live in Galway?

Like I said it is costly but not unaffordable at the minute per month it probably costs me around 600 euro. This price includes for me rent, bills, living costs and diesel as I do live 3 hours away and travel home most weekends!

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Galway? Is there any advice you can give?

No. As Galway is a student town there is lots of available accommodation. I advise anyone coming here as a visiting student to get in touch with the accommodations office here in NUIG as every year they have a list of all available accommodations. As for areas to live I would advise Hazel Park, Cherry Park or Laurel Park all are close to university. If you prefer to live closer to town the Brendans avenue is your spot!

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Irish food is fantastic, however no food is like your home food. Ireland offers many different types of food and generally speaking most super markets are to a high standard! Aldi, Lidl are probably the cheapest shopping options. My favourite dish is of course stew!

What places would you recommend visiting in Galway?

Clifs of Moher, Salt hill, I also highly recommend you visit the Giants Causeway which is in the north of Ireland and if you get a chance head for Donegal where the beaches and walks are the most beautiful I have ever experienced in my life.

Is it good to eat out in Galway? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yes! If you only eat in one place the whole year make it Mc Donaghs fish and chip shop on shop st. This place has converted me to liking fish! I do not eat fish anywhere else and this fish and chip shop has been awarded the best in Ireland. If you are into Italian food then Milanos is another. For something a bit more special try Rouge which is a nice experience! Lastly if your looking for a quick bite to eat try Mc Cambridges for a delicious sandwich!

Is the nightlife good in Galway? Where is good to go?

My favourite are Karma, Electric, the Kings Head and the Roisin Dubh.

What advice would you give future students heading to Galway?

Be prepared for rainy days, as it rains most days in Galway however do not let this stop you as Galway offers one of the best student experiences in Ireland. Good Luck and I hope you have a fantastic time on your Erasmus experience!
