What is it like to live in Funchal? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I love to live here, I've been living here for 9 years. People are simple and kind. The city is small, easy to get around, clean and beautiful, but no much to do in terms of "having fun" (specially now in a pandemic, however still better than majority of the countries right now.

What is the student lifestyle like in Funchal?

I'm used to rent a private room with a private toilet to Erasmus students and so far my experience is very good! They get enough time to go study, come home, rest and enjoy lie outdoors!

How much does it cost to live in Funchal?

It dependes a lot on your life style, but compared to majority of the European countries, life here can be cheap!!

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Funchal? Is there any advice you can give?

I guess it's pretty easy, but it is VERY important to see the distance of the homes/rooms you're seeing and the places you need to be often.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

As a vegan I can' t give much advices on this subject, but there are amazing fruits and vegetables here!!

What places would you recommend visiting in Funchal?

Livraria Esperança; Jardim Palace (no Monte); piscinas do Lido; Praia do Fort in the afternoon, lots of youth are going there nowadays! Also Barreirinha (for live and good music - meet young people there).

Is it good to eat out in Funchal? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

*Il Basilico for a fancy dinner or lunch (pastas around 9,90)
*Casa do Chá na Praça Amarela

Is the nightlife good in Funchal? Where is good to go?

Nope. Night life here is not interesting at all. I am just saying the truth. Of course young people will always find ways to have fun together, but the bars are not beautiful or creative in their decoration and menus!! :( Yeah... it sucks!!

What advice would you give future students heading to Funchal?

Bring good sportive shoes!!
Bring a good jacket (yes, it get cold in the mountains and you Will feel cold, no matter if you are from Norway or Poland)!!
Buy a bus ticket for a month ---- but if you can, come prepared to rent a car and drive around the island because it's almost impossible to do it without a car and people here are not used to give rides to strangers.
