Erasmus Experience in Foggia, Italy by Francisco Javier

Why did you choose to go to Foggia, Italy?

I wanted to go to a city in the south of Italy.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

10 months. Between the European grant and the money form the university, I got about €250 a month - that's if you're from Extremadura.

What is the student lifestyle like in Foggia?

It's good, because as there aren't many Erasmus students, around 70, you all get to know each other. But it's not so good if you were hoping to meet more people than that.

Would you recommend the city and the university of Foggia to other students?

It's good if you're a business and management or law student, since those faculties are right next to where you'll be living. There's not a lot to see in the city, or much to do for nights out... but it's a nice place to live, the food is good, you can get around all of the different places easily on foot, by bike or by bus. Additionally, parties with your fellow Erasmus students will make for a great year.

What is the food like there?

It's really good.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Foggia?

No, the ESN there will help you out. You'll find people to guide you and to help you find a house at the International Relations office, too.

How much does it cost to live in Foggia?

I would guess that, between the rent, the food and other expenses, you spend around €500 a month. It does vary person to person and depends on what you get up to.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?

If you push yourself and do your part, it's nice and easy to learn. The university offers a basic Italian course, if you want to learn more or to get to a higher level, do what suits you best.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Foggia from your city?

I'd recommend flying into Bari airport, and from there getting the train to Foggia. Though you should do some research, because prices and routes change all the time. And be careful when it comes to your luggage.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Foggia?

The city centre.

And to eat in Foggia? What are some of your favourite places to go?

There are a lot of pizzerias, my advice is to go and discover some places yourself by asking around the people there and trying different things.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

There's very little, if anything, to see here...

Do you have any advice for students coming to Foggia in the future?

Enjoy the experience and even if the city isn't what you expected, make the most of it to travel and live life in southern Italy, it has it's own charm and you'll miss it when you leave.
