Erasmus Experience in Florianópolis, Brazil

Why did you choose to go to Florianópolis, Brazil?

One one of my aims was to go to Brazil and, out of all the universities with links with mine in Portugal, it was UNISUL's curriculum that interested me the most. Beyond this it's a really beautiful island which is very animated.

How long does the grant last? How much money do you get for help?

I didn't get a grant.

What's the student environment like in Florianópolis?

The environment is great. There are many Portuguese and some Spanish, German and French people... the majority live together in the Lagoa da Conceição.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Florianópolis to other students?

Definitely. The Federal University of Santa Catarina is better located than UNISUL, but they're both good. The International Relations office in UNISUL is better run.

How's the country's food?

It's reasonable. Portuguese food is a lot better.

How easily did you find accommodation in Florianópolis?

I had a bit of luck, because I wasn't with a programme. I was in an inn for the first few days, but I soon found other exchange students in the same university and they had a spare room, the problem was soon resolved.

How are the accommodation prices? And the prices in general?

I think that with €150/€200 for a room, it's quite good. As far as the rest of things, the prices aren't that different from Portugal.

What's the language like? Did you attend a language course at the university?

As I'm Portuguese, I didn't have a problem with the language.

What is the cheapest way to get to Florianópolis from your city?

The cheapest, I don't know, but the journey is long, so the fewer stopovers on the flight the better.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Florianópolis?

Confraria das Artes, P12, El Divino, Pacha... In Balneário de Camboriú you'll also find some of the best clubs in Brazil.

And eating out in Florianópolis? Can you name your favourite places?

I don't remember much.

And in terms of cultural visits?

Santo António de Lisboa, Ilha do Campeche, Mercado Municipal.

Do you have any advice you'd like to give future students in Florianópolis?

Have fun. There's loads to do on the island. And stay there for New Year's Eve (in Floripa or on other beach in the state), and in summer, it's the best time.
