Erasmus Experience in Essen, Germany by çağla
Why did you choose to go to Essen, Germany?
I chose Germany because it is really a good country to study engineering. And I started learning German as a new language.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship is 400 Euro per month . I pay my rent and the rest I spend for my needs. Of course, scholarship is not enough, but I do not think life is expensive here for a student because the supermarkets are quite cheap here.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Essen to other students?
I recommend it if you are an exchange student . Because in Essen at my student residence all students are almost Erasmus students and it makes here more comfortable and entertaining. Every week there is a party at dormitory if you are interested in parties , so it is good :D Except this ,it is sometimes boring for people who come from big cities.. the city is small but transportation is good you can visit another big and attractive cities ( Cologne , Bonn, Dusseldorf ,Aachen...). And i love nature so there are lots of beuaties with its rivers and lakes :) . I dont think so the quality of education in civil engineering is very good but teachers are really good and helpful for exchange students as much as i get to know . I havent see summer here yet , but winter it has a boring campus life . But exchange students are lucky , they can always have lots of friends here :)))
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Essen?
No . Because university has student dormitories which you can find a place easily if you attend with Erasmus program . Before coming here it was easy to apply for a room and have one of them .
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes .You definitely learn and improve your German ,because you are constantly exposed to that language . Also university has lots of language courses that i am impressed with this opportunity :)
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Essen from your city?
If you are a student here, you can visit all provinces within the state and borders of the state free of charge with your semester ticket. But you need to pay for the semester ticket in the beginning.
It costs 318 euros but this price is nothing for this superb and very useful ticket!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Essen?
