18th August -Nightmare and chaos
My Facebook post on the morning of 18th of August 2016 says something like this ...
It became as a normal day here in extremely sunny Elazig , I woke up as usual at 8:20 am because I am so lazy and I cannot wake up anymore at 7 am as I used to do in order to get my make up going and look sharp. I don’t know what happened this weeks , maybe I am too lazy to do so or maybe is just the desert weather which burns my skin with it’s 41 degrees daily .
What it use to be a very boring Thursday at the Erasmus office soon will change in a tremendous nightmare which never cross my mind before .
I got dressed in less than 10 minutes , I spoke a bit with my boyfriend Muhammet as he woke up earlier than me , packed my bag and headed to the International Erasmus office where I do my internship for the past 7 months with only one month to go until I finish. Incidents happened in Turkey for the past year that I am here but I never felt and saw one so close to me ...
On the 15th of July it was a major coup attempt in Turkey with big protests and attacks in the city of Istanbul and Ankara and in the other cities like Elazig in which I am currently ,just some street protests and some noises no big deal , not something that I should be afraid off before . Couple of weeks before the coup it was a huge explosion in the Ataturk Airport in Istanbul , one of the Erasmus students who was about to come to Elazig was caught in the explosion . Fortunately nothing happened but still lives of many people ended in the night as well as in the coup attempt. What are we Erasmus students suppose to do in this cases ? Call the Embassy ,call our coordinator , go home what ? We are not prepared to go throw this and for sure we do no know before coming to an Erasmus that something like this will happen ever!
But still it did !
I arrived at the office at 9 sharp because I always am very punctual, it is something I am trying to respect all the time , being on time Is the biggest asset one can have. So I entered my office , the other Erasmus boys came minutes after me because is a tradition we have every Thursday we have breakfast together with the entire staff of Erasmus and our main coordinator here in Firat University. As we were chatting and were waiting the breakfast to be settle on the table I heard a huge noise and all of the sudden all the windows and doors crashed and made a big boom . My ears got numb for a second or so I could not hear anything and then a sort of pain was inside my ears .
It sounded like an explosion!!
We looked at one another and first word was ‘’it’s a bomb’’ ...
We went fast outside the balcony we have and a huge black smoke was in front of us. Some big trees are in front of the office so they kind off blocked our view but you can still see on the sky very black shade of smoke . My first taught was that it happened in the center , then as I taught more I said no , it was in Ramada hotel which was just outside the campus . Then the boys said no , is a possibility to be inside the campus .
My boyfriend text me saying ‘’omg babe’’ I reply ‘’saying it was a bomb’’ ,‘’i am going outside’’ .
Me and the boys decided to steo outside the office in order to look closer. I cannot tell you now if I felt panic or worries or what sort of emotion but I remembered I was not scared at all. The were walking towards the smoke when it became blacker and blacker and getting so tall in the sky . Sound of ambulances and police was loud enough , people were running towards the explosion because until now we were convinced it was an explosion , the smoke was black so I knew it was a bomb .
Two days ago another explosion happened on the hills of Elazig but it was a completely different smoke , it was white and very short on the sky . Later I learn that it was a dynamite detonation on a rock career near the campus , completely harmless. But this explosion was completely different , the shade of black was the sign that it was a bomb.
I met Muhammet on the way down and together with the boys we went throw the campus exit , I saw a lot of people and cars and as I was waking more closer I noticed almost all the windows on the building close to the exit were shattered and felt down, parts of the building were collapsing . Girls and women on the street were crying and talking on the phone. Then I saw this big building which I knew was the Police department here in Elazig that it was smoky and completely covered in fire but destroyed with every little piece.
‘’They bombed the police station’’
Muhammet checked fast his news app and we found out that a suicide car bomb was all about and we knew then that the PKK terrorists are the guilty ones . They always targeting police and military stations all over Turkey . Last night they carry out an attack on Van a city close to the Iranian border , then a week ago other attacks in Diyarbakir and so on .
Everybody was saying that nothing can happen in Elazig , it was never an attack and will never be , well look that it happened on the 18th August at 9:20 am . Life of 12 people ended and 180 wounded . People who wants to come to Turkey for Erasmus they write me daily emails saying and asking me if this is a safe city to travel in , I always tell them what my coordinator told me too , that is the most safe city in South Eastern Turkey and nothing will ever happen here . I lied myself and I lied others , new students are about to come starting September as a new semester starts and new Erasmus opportunities arrive . How can this students come here now after this big blast ? What I will tell them tomorrow when I return to the office and bunch of emails are waiting me ?
I cannot lie anymore and even tough I knew inside my heart here is not safe now I have the prove , I do not recommend to nobody to come here anymore for Erasmus or Turkey for all , is not safe anymore this country . Over 10 attacks in the last year and today so close to me , 500 meters between our office and the police station. Every morning one of our students use to go on this road in order to arrive in Carrefour supermarket at about 9 am his always doing his grocery shopping . Thankfully today he was at the airport heading home for a small holiday . What if he passed that road today ? Or what happened to the people that were crossing the street in that time. I saw now a video of the explosion from the video cameras located in that intersection and it was showing a mini bus stopping on the light when it detonated .
I immediately called my mom letting her know I am okay but this city is not okay and this happened . Tons of Facebook messages on my phone asking me if I am okay. Muhammet ran away to hospital in order to donate blood in case they need . I was afraid to stay in the crowd even if I did not get too close , too many people in that moment and cars , I was afraid of another incident so me and the boys returned to the office where we opened the live news and discussed on what happened. Boys they were scared of course and they were talking about what’s going to happened next with them .
I took a day off from the office today and came home , Muhammet left to work and I am staying home and writing this blog post to you guys . I am okay and I will not return home , I have less than 6 weeks until all is finish so I will stay here in the middle of the chaos . We all should pray for the wounded and for everybody ‘s family involved in today’s bombing .
Letters saying Firat University outisde in the maine entrance of the campus has felt down due to the power of the explosion as you can see in the picture above.
Stay safe no matter what , in Turkey or other country !!
