My Experience in Düsseldorf, Germany by Ceyhun
What is it like to live in Düsseldorf? Would you recommend it? How is the city?
First things first, Düsseldorf is a gorgeous city.
What is the student life like in Düsseldorf?
There are two Universities in Düsseldorf, both are very big and important. Therefore, as you can imagine, there are many opportunities to do what you like. The variety of cultures, religions, interests is endless and incredible. You can easily find people (and groups and clubs as well) that you can join you and talk about your interests with.
For me, as I am interested in the arts, it was important that Düsseldorf has lots of museums and small art studios, large and important studios, design shops, and of course, both historical and modern architecture throughout the city. Sometimes there are also markets and art exhibitions, as well as design, too.
How much does it cost to live in Düsseldorf?
Düsseldorf is very expensive in the centre (the middle areas by the river), where usually the students are not allowed to live in. However, this is no problem as there are other neighbourhoods close to the centre with great public transport connection (bus, tram). I would recommend Derendorf and Pempelfort, both of which are about 10-15 minutes away from the centre.
Where would you recommend to visit in Düsseldorf?
The Zollhof Harbour, the historic centre (Altstadt) with its popular party hotspots, the entire Rhine area of river (especially in Summer), the shopping places in Kö (Königsallee) and Wehrhahn, the art museum... Those would be the places I immediately think of.
Is it nice to eat outside in Düsseldorf? Can you tell us your favourite places?
As I mentioned before, there are many different cultures interlinked in this city, so you will be able to find whatever you would like to eat, and you will have the opportunity to try many new things as well. Personally, I like to eat in the Turkish and Asian (Japanese and Chinese) restaurants and also some chips in the old town (Altstadt). Everyone can find any type of food at whatever your budget is. There are expensive restaurants and also cheap ones that also have delicious food.
Some restaurants to go to are: Saray, Mongo's, Cha Cha, Naniwa, Lupo Pizza, 3h's Burger, and Extrablatt.
What advice would you give to future students coming to Düsseldorf?
Do an internet search for events, festivals and exhibitions that are going to happen during your time here. Some popular ones are Japanese New Year, the Rhine Carnival and Festival next to the river.
If there is something special happening, I usually Google the location I plan to go to and look at other customers' ratings. I think it's a good method, but it's often okay to just go out too, walk through the streets and surprise yourself.
