Erasmus experience in Durham, United Kingdom

Why did you choose to go to Durham, UK?

I chose to go to Durham because I always wanted to improve my knowledge of the English language and I've always been fascinated with the British culture. Durham was the only city in the UK that I could choose (because of my University's partnership) and it's a renowned University.

How long was your scholarship? How much grant money did you receive?

I received the grant for the duration of my stay, 9 months. It was about 250 euros a month.

How was the student environment in Durham?

The student environment is special and exciting, for someone who has only studied at an Italian University, it's certainly something to try out.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Durham to other students?

Certainly.

What is the food like in Durham?

Not that great if you're Italian.

Was it hard to find accommodation in Durham?

Not particularly, as there's a university-recommended housing search engine, which is pretty good.

How much does it cost to live in Durham?

Quite a lot, but obviously it depends on the standard of living that one has. My rent came to about £316 a month will all bills included. The cost of living is quite high, like all of England but it's nothing compared to living in London.

How is your English coming along? Have you taken any course offered by the University?

Really well, it depends on who you hang out with. I played in the football team of my University college therefore I became friends with lots of English guys, with whom I'm still frequently in contact. The experience of playing football has definitely made it easier to learn the language.

What's the cheapest way to get to Durham from your city?

From Pisa, it's more convenient flying to Leeds or Newcastle and then getting the train to Durham. I suggest booking the train in advance as it will significantly decrease the cost of the ticket.

Where do you suggest for going out at night in Durham?

Durham is not that big so you can easily go everywhere. The college bars are scattered around the city and they offer the cheapest beers. In terms of clubs: Fabio's is a club that has free entry and is always open, so its very convenient. Klute is considered one of the worst clubs in Europe but I think it's worth going at least once. Also, Newcastle is very close (about a 12 minute train journey), so it's worth going there for a few nights out.

Eating out in Durham, what are your favorite places?

I nearly always ate at home but when I went out I would mainly eat at pubs. My favorite were "The Market Tavern" and the "New Inn". The latter has a lot of offers for students.

Cultural places to visit?

The Durham Cathedral and the Castle.

What advice would you give to future Durham University students?

Go to Durham! For me, it was a fantastic experience!
