Discovering Dublin City

Dublin is quite a green city: Strolling through the streets, you can see many parks and lawns. This one includes another obelisk as a monument. It's close to the archeological and botanical museum which is well worth a visit!

The buildings in the inner city are very colourful, and the shopping mall invites you to wander around and take a look at local specialties (if you manage to get past the tourist shops, that is).

A famous site in Dublin is the Ha'Penny Bridge over the river Liffey; it takes its name from the toll of half a penny that pedestrians had to pay up until 1919 if they wanted to cross the bridge. It was the first metal bridge in the city, and remained the only one until 2000 when another one was opened. Its white arches make it an icon of Dublin.

The majestic white shopping mall of Dublin uses a very light structure to host many traditional businesses and shops alongside international merchandise on three floors. In the beginning, it can be a bit chaotic, including the stairs. But you will find your way around sooner or later ...

Last but not least, the CIty Library is a place worth seeing. It hosts a national relic: The oldest preserved Celtic harp, also many statues of famous statesmen and philosophers, beginning from Plato and Aristotle. I will tell you a nice story to finish: We met a Russian guard there, and my grandfather (being a historian) also talked to him about the history about Germany and Russia. His reaction was (in spite of the common memory of the many wars fought): We can still be kind to each other today, and it costs nothing! What a great encounter ...
