What is it like to live in Dhaka? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Source

Dhaka is a good place to live in depending on which are you are in. If you're living in Baridhara, Gulshan, Banani or even Dhanmondi then I would definitely recommend it. The city if full of different kinds of people, mostly friendly ones. Common people in the streets sometimes stare a lot though which can get quite uncomfortable.

What is the student lifestyle like in Dhaka?

Student life is tough if you're in high school because there's a lot of pressure. It is definitely not the ideal place to study in.

How much does it cost to live in Dhaka?

Dhaka is very cheap. You can buy almost anything, be it food or clothing for less than half as much as in a first world country. It's probably because there aren't any designer stores available here. If you like to stay in trend, do not shop here! But food is amazing if you know the right places to go to.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Dhaka? Is there any advice you can give?

Accommodation is slightly difficult. People are helpful if you know who to ask but English is the second language and most people won't be able to give you directions even if they can't communicate, even if they want to help.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Our national food is rice and I am not a big fan of it if that's what you have to have every day. Other than that, food in Dhaka is really very good. We have all kinds of cuisines available at every price, depending on how much you're willing to spend; whether you decide to go some place fancy or just get a takeaway, they all taste good. My favourite local food here would be spicy kebab and favourite fancy place would be a dinner buffet at The Westin.

What places would you recommend visiting in Dhaka?

Historical places here are not worth going to. They are dull and boring even for those are into these things. We don't have any good theme parks and the only decent one we have doesn't even have a proper roller coaster! Places to visit would really just be hangout spots for students if it has to be in the city. Whereas the whole country is concerned, I would recommend going to Cox's bazaar sea beach and Sylhet.

Is it good to eat out in Dhaka? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yes, eating out is simply great in Dhaka. Here are some places I would suggest:

  • For steak lovers: Steak house, Spaghetti Jazz.
  • For ice-cream lovers: New Zealand Naturals, Cream & Fudge, Move'n'pick.
  • For shisha lovers: Hotel Regency, Floor 6, h2o.
  • For Chinese food lovers: Mainland China.
  • For Japanese food lovers: Ichi.
  • For Indian food lovers: The Village, Koyla, Captain's world.
  • For Bangladeshi food lovers: Dhanshiri, BBQ tonight.
  • For Coffee and snacks: Gloria Jeans Coffee, Barista Lavazza.
  • For Chicken and fast food lovers: Nando's, BFC, KFC, A&W, Kenny Roger's Roasters, B&B, American Burger.
  • For a fancy dinner: The Westin, Radisson Blu, The Regency.

Is the nightlife good in Dhaka? Where is good to go?

Night life is nothing special in Dhaka. There are VERY few clubs. Since it's an Islamic country, there aren't many places one can go drinking. It's easier if you have a foreign passport. Most places shut down after 12 unless it's an ice-cream parlour or such. Night life in Dhaka for students is staying up and using the not-so-fast internet.

What advice would you give future students heading to Dhaka?

Prepare yourself for lots of ups and downs and surprises, some of which will be pleasant and some not so much. If you have somebody to show you around and guide you, it's quite a nice place to be in. If you're on you're own, well, don't be! -specially if you're new.

Good luck.
