Experience in Dhaka, Bangladesh by Ehsan Ahmed
What is it like to live in Dhaka? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Dhaka is a big city. You will find different atmosphere at its different areas. I would recommend you visit here for achieving a new experience. The city is full of people and you might get annoyed with traffic congestion. But you will love the traditional spicy foods and rickshaw rides.
What is the student lifestyle like in Dhaka?
University students usually live in dorms or private hostels. Its not much costly to live here. Its not a city for partying or beers. But you will love to walk around the roads with your friends while having street foods.
How much does it cost to live in Dhaka?
It depends on your lifestyle. On average 70-100 Euro for housing, and 130-200 Euro for food and other expenses would be enough.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Dhaka? Is there any advice you can give?
You should try the University dorms first, which would be cheapest and best option. Otherwise you can look for private student hostels in advance, there are many options available now.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Foods are spicy and you will love them! You will love the kebabs with nan or paratha. There are so many items to try out e.g. kacchi biriyani, tehari, halim, beef/mutton roasts, chicken rezala etc. If you don't like asian/indian foods, there are many fast-food chains too, e.g. kfc, pizza hut, dominos etc. Also there are so many sweet items to try out too. My favourite dishes are vegetable fries, egg curry with coconut, beef bhuna and dal with rice among many others.
What places would you recommend visiting in Dhaka?
Ahsanullah Manjil, Lalbag Fort, National Museum, Dhaka University Campus,Ramna park, Botanical Garden, Mirpur Zoo etc.
Is it good to eat out in Dhaka? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Of course. There are so many places to try out. In old Dhaka you will find the traditional curry items. Street foods are popular in University areas, bailey road, Mohammadpur, khilgaon, 300 ft road etc. My favourite spots are Tabaq coffee, KFC, Burger King, Yum Chaa District, Star Restaurant etc.
Is the nightlife good in Dhaka? Where is good to go?
You may not like the nightlife if you are into beers, alcohols or partying. Some high end restaurants only have those facilities. You can go to the Cineplex for movies, have dinner at restaurants or walk around the campus with friends.
What advice would you give future students heading to Dhaka?
Take local friends with you during shopping to avail items in actual prices. Use of apps for bike/car rides will be helpful to go places. Google maps are helpful to find desired locations. Keep extra time for traffic in your daily travel plans.
