Erasmus Experience in Covilhã, Portugal by Justyna
Why did you choose to go to Covilhã, Portugal?
I heard a lot of good information from my older friends who were in Covilha before.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I was in Covi 2 semesters plus holidays to make my Erasmus practice. Generally per month minimum necessary is 300-400 Euro. 100 euro- dormitory, 150 euro (less or more)- food, and the rest of money generally for small pleasures and trips!
What is the student lifestyle like in Covilhã?
Amazing is that in Covilha you have time for everything! For parties, for trips, for education too.. Portuguese people are very open and friendly. In Covilha life is a lot slower, you can rest, enjoy beautiful time, weather and view.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Covilhã to other students?
Always!
What is the food like?
The most famous is "bacalhau com batata". But here you can try a lot of cakes. Portuguese people loves desserts. Generally they love it. At night it is possible visit two factories and buy fresh, still warm and very tasty cookies, etc. Lunch break - we love it!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Covilhã?
Residence pack 100 euro. Almost every Erasmus lives there. Generally, we can't complain. Minus- in winter sometimes in rooms it is very cold, because heaters not always are warm, and big problems with internet. Sometimes it is good, sometimes totally zero.
How much does it cost to live in Covilhã?
300-400 euro. If you want it's enough even 250 per month- if you are economic!
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Portuguese language is really cool, and classes with prof. Rita are amazing! She is a really good and very friendly teacher. We had courses for free, but now I think 1 semester costs like 100 euro. But I think it's really good idea to go and learn. Classes are 3 times in the week. Later you will get certificate and 3 extra points ECTS. Generally, a course is very helpful, without it, it is really difficult to comunicate here. Basic Portuguese is really necessary.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Covilhã from your city?
Portugal- Poland. RyanAir.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Covilhã?
Fridays- Birras bar close to the residence, another days Artbaro, Companhia, on Wednesdays at Química bar is ladies night-alcohol for women for free!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Covilhã?
Saude restaurant. The best francesinha ever! You must try it!
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Covilhã in the future?
Enjoy your time! It's just once in your life!
