Experience in Coventry, United Kingdom by Alison
What is it like to live in Coventry? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Coventry is a city that was reconstructed from rubble after being bombed in World War II, therefore it is not a very beautiful city. However, it has lots of things to do, for example: there is a cinema; an ice-rink; an indoor water-park (in the process of being built for spring 2019); lots of shops, pubs and bars/clubs.
What is the student lifestyle like in Coventry?
Student lifestyle is very active. Coventry has university students from both the University of Warwick, and Coventry University, so there are a lot of students and a lot of student events.
How much does it cost to live in Coventry?
Coventry is averagely priced regarding cities in England. Some places within Coventry are cheaper, or more expensive, than others.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Coventry? Is there any advice you can give?
Look in advance, but there will be places. Sometimes places become available after contracts have ended e. g. if you're looking for accommodation for September, there might be places available as early as September the year before you move in, or as late as the last few weeks in August.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
There are lots of different restaurants and [super]markets around. Along with classic pub food, there are Asian stores, Afro-Asian stores, restaurants with Latin American style food, Caribbean-style food etc. There is a lot of diversity in the dishes available.
What places would you recommend visiting in Coventry?
Coventry is also near other attractions/interesting places e. g. Kenilworth Castle. I would recommend visiting there, as it is quite pretty (especially in the summer with the sun), and a castle is always relatively interesting.
Is it good to eat out in Coventry? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Coventry always has somewhere open to eat out at, or to order food from for at home. Most restaurants are chain restaurants (e. g. Bella Italia, Wagamamas, McDonalds, Domino's).
Is the nightlife good in Coventry? Where is good to go?
Due to the student population in Coventry, it has quite a lively nightlife. Kasbah is a popular club for both Warwick and Coventry students. Near to Coventry is also Leamington Spa, which is a popular spot for students to go to at night, as there are quite a few good bars and clubs.
What advice would you give future students heading to Coventry?
Like most places, Coventry can be a little bit dangerous if you don't have your wits about you. It can also appear very dull and grey at the beginning. But, if you learn where to go and what to do, you can have a very active and happy social life.
