Corinth was a flourishing cosmopolitan city; a  former ally of Sparta, it became a Roman colony and survived the turbulent medieval and early modern times. Famous people associated with the city are Periander (a sage), Diogenes (a cynic philosopher) and St Paul (see below).

This is the "Fountain of Glauke" where she (also known as Creusa) died after the argonaut Jason left her.

This is the orator's stage (bema) where the apostle St Paul preached and wrote his letters to the Corinthians.

Its top was later used as a Christian basilica, hence the cross ornaments.

Another surviving fragment is the Temple of Apollon. Lastly, also Goethe and Schiller wrote about the city.
