Budget grocery shopping in Copenhagen

Introduction

Hello, everyone! I hope that you are all doing just fine.

In this article I want to tell you about the budget grocery shopping in Copenhagen, because as everyone knows, it’s the city, where living is very expensive and even the Danes admit that.

When I got to know, that I was going to go to Copenhagen for some time to study there, I immediately started searching for some shops and places, where I would buy some food in cheap prices, because food is an essential thing when it comes to living somewhere. Fortunately, I found some articles and web pages about cheap shopping in Copenhagen and then I visited those places to check them out and now I’m going to share that information with you.

First of all, I want to tell you, that while it’s a pretty popular and fancy supermarket, you should not go to Irma supermarket if there’s something unique in there, which they don’t have in other supermarkets. That is probably the most expensive supermarket in Denmark and while they have pretty good stuff and various things, they have the highest prices comparing to other supermarkets. The only thing I bought there was the Flodeboller, which was different from the Flodebollers in other supermarkets and they cost a lot, I must say.

Now let’s talk about the cheaper supermarkets in Copenhagen.

Budget grocery shopping in Copenhagen

Netto supermarket

Starting with the cheapest ones, Netto is the best supermarkets in Copenhagen, which I visited a lot, because it was almost in every corner and things there were pretty cheap and they had many sales weekly. Some people say, that there is not much variety of groceries there, however, I was pretty satisfied with everything they had there.

To be honest, the staff was not very good in Netto supermarkets and there used to be long lines on the cashiers, because they worked very slowly and they didn’t really know what they sold. That’s why you should have been careful when they sold you something. They would usually ask whether you wanted a check or not and you should have taken the paycheck and check if everything was counted right.

The choice of fruits and vegetables in Netto supermarket was vast and they had almost everything there including nectarines, strawberries, blueberries, apples, potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. The prices were alright, too, especially when there were sales on some fruits and vegetables.

They have a large section of baked stuff in Netto supermarkets, which I liked very much. You can find small baguettes, chocolate chip cakes, Rumkugles, pizza slices, muffins, etc., all freshly baked and not very expensive.

They have great choice of ice creams with sales on every week.

They also have a tiramisu cake portions for only 10 DKK, which I found very delicious and since I love tiramisu cake, I would usually buy it. It’s 80 grams each portion and there are two of them in one package.

The other thing, that they have there are the salads in small containers, which cost not more than 14 DKK. The mackerel salad is the most delicious one if you love fish. The other ones are vegetable salads with mayonnaise.

They have lots of frozen fruits and I especially liked their frozen raspberries, because when they melted, they had the same taste as the new ones in comparison to the frozen strawberries, which didn’t have any taste at all.

Fakta supermarket

Fakta is something like the Netto supermarket and the prices are cheap, too. However, while the Netto supermarket can be found in many places around Copenhagen, Fakta is not like that. I just know about two Fakta supermarkets, one of which is located nearby the Norreport station and the other one in Frederiksberg nearby the Frederiksberg metro station.

This supermarket is pretty usual, too. There are just usual things such as dairy products and frozen groceries, chocolate bars, coffee, tea, bread, fruits, vegetables and nothing very fancy. It’s just a regular supermarket and it has weekly sales on products, too.

Rema 1000 supermarket

Rema 1000 is a usual supermarket with usual prices, not very cheap and not very expensive, either, if you want to know the truth. It was located somewhere nearby my accommodation in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen and I could visit it and go shopping there. It was more close to the metro station Forum, though it closed on 8 in the evening.

Well, you can find Rema 1000 supermarket on Hammerichsgade 1, Copenhagen and you can shop there comfortably, however, you should know, that there can be some queues, it all depends on when you go shopping there, because there are some periods of time, when there are many people shopping there and at those times, there are long lines there.

Rema 1000 have their web page, too, it’s Rema 1000 and you can visit them and see some of the information about them and their products there. Or you can call them on the phone +45 33 93 68 63 and ask your questions.

It’s still the cheap supermarket comparing to Irma supermarket in Copenhagen, which is a very expensive one. The motto of the Rema 1000 is "Discounts without all the hassle. "

They offer a variety of groceries in Rema1000, however, you can’t compare it to Netto supermarket, where there is much choice in fruits and vegetables.

Seven-Eleven supermarket

Seven-Eleven supermarket is not the place, which I visited very often and, besides, the supermarkets are not large. However, if you seek to have some American chocolate bars bought, you should visit the Seven-Eleven supermarket, because you can find the Snickers and Bounty and Twix and Mars chocolate bars there.

While the groceries offered to the clients are not much, you can have a tasteful bite of their pastry. They have freshly baked pizza slices and hotdogs and hamburgers and wraps, etc. which look and taste really good and though the prices are not cheap, you should definitely try their chicken wraps or grilled pork, because you won’t really find such things in cheaper prices in Copenhagen.

There are Seven-Eleven supermarkets in many places around the city of Copenhagen and you may be surprised, but there are 8 stores of 7-Eleven just at Copenhagen Central Station, which I don’t find very large, to be honest.

Budget grocery shopping in Copenhagen

The 7-Eleven store has its own kind of flag, which is in colours of the rainbow.

Well, those are the cheaper grocery stores in Copenhagen, however, the cheapest ones which I recommend to everyone is the Netto supermarket.

You should also know, that when going shopping for groceries, you should take a shopping bag with you, otherwise you will have to buy the shopping bag in the supermarket and they don’t even sell shopping bags in most of the supermarkets and I always forgot taking a shopping bag with me and I ended up taking the groceries with my bare hands and it’s really awful when you have to walk all the way to your accommodation.

If you buy lots of drinks in cans and you have them at home or collected somewhere, there are machines in the entrance of the supermarkets, such as Fakta supermarket, where you can put those cans and the machines give you some money for that. There are people who live their lives with that thing. They look in the trash cans and boxes and they collect such cans and then they take them to the supermarket machines and get some money. There are machines for the bottles, too. Once when we were at Faelledparken having some beer and hanging out, there came some people on bicycles with the cans and bottles in plastic bags asking us whether we needed those empty cans of beeror not and I wondered why they needed them and then I got to know about the business of those things.
