Erasmus Experience in Celje, Slovenia by Salamandra

What is the student lifestyle like in Celje?

Most students drink coffee with their friends at local "kavarnas" during the day. They can also go to a nighclub, however, the choice is rather poor. There are a few nighclubs and pubs where you can have some good time. On the other hand, if you expect to experience a true and unforgetable nightlife, you would have to go to Ljubljana. Celje is a rather boring city, most of the youth cannot wait to leave it. Celje is really suitable for young families with children, since it is a calm, monotonous city, where nothing is really going on.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?

The language is difficult in terms of its grammar. However, if you understand or speak Russian, you wouldn't have much difficulties understanding the local language. However, when it comes to Slovenes, you don't have to worry, since most people speak really good English here.

Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Celje?

Depending on your financial situation I would strongly recommend to be prepared to travel a lot round the country, since Slovenia has to offer many beautiful landscapes and mountains. If you can, bring your bike here. Celje is a relatively small city, as a result, you won't have to use public transportation, such as a bus or a tram. As my mentor said "everything is close, everything can be reached by foot". However, if you want to get from point A to point B faster, ride a bike.
