My Experience in Casablanca, Morocco by Yassine

How did you find the city of Casablanca for living? Do you recommend it? What is the city like?

A warm welcome, ambience and liveliness are the daily norms in an extraordinary city. Rich from the diversity of cultures it welcomes, Casablanca gracefully combines the tradition of the old Medina with the modernity of its posh districts. The charming architectural heritage of this art-deco city perfectly mixes both neo-Moorish and neo-Classic styles, along with its unquestionable artistic soul, which is displayed in its art museums and galleries.

A big centre of relaxation and entertainment, Casablanca has a large selection of activities: beaches and pools, health and fitness centres, hammams and aqua parks, as well as an array of laid-back restaurants, red-hot nightclubs and piano bars.

But it doesn't forget its business side either. An aerospatial hub, Casablanca is, on average, a 3-hour flight from Europe and welcomes a multitude of airline companies, travel agencies and car-rental companies. With its port and the planned construction of a marina, Casablanca will also be the principal port for cruise-ships in Morocco. However it remains an ideal place to live thanks to its weather, the sea, its gardens, and its tradition and modernity constantly opposing one another.

How is the student atmosphere in Casablanca?

The agglomeration of Casablanca constitues one of the most important university centres in the Maghreb. Every year more than 27000 young graduates from universities, specialist schools and higher-education centres supply the labour market.

What is the cost of living in Casablanca?

I'll let you know that Casablanca is an expensive city for everything concerning its middle- and upper-class areas. Needless to say, if you live in a lower-class area, it's a little less expensive. Everything depends on your financial means.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Casablanca? Do you have any advice?

In big cities like Casablanca, Agadir or Marrakech, the rent varies from 700 to 800€ for a 100m² apartment, to which we can add 150 to 200€ if the apartment is furnished.

My advice is to make your own judgement via the sites Maroc-annonces and Bikhir. ma (avito. ma). Very similar to their cousin LeBonCoin, these sites gather all the rental offers from the big (and small) cities, with photos and prices. When consulting the prices, don't forget that everything is negotiable!
