What is it like to live in Cape Town? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

People are friendly and welcoming. Cape Town University (UCT) is very diverse and has a beautiful campus.

How much does it cost to live in Cape Town?

It is really very cheap compared to European prices. A smallish 2 bedroom flat near the University would cost roughly 450Eur per month. To live in one of UCT's many residences on campus would be even cheaper.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Cape Town? Is there any advice you can give?

They usually assign people to UCT residences based on your School Leaving Certificate. So people with higher marks are usually guaranteed a spot, but if you don't get in you could always just rent a flat.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food depends on which UCT resident you are in. At the residence where I was (Graca Machel Hall) the food was quite good. The servings where also quite big (I could never actually finish my plate). They would have fresh salads daily and dishes would include fish and chips, schnitzel and mashed potatoes with vegetables etc.

What places would you recommend visiting in Cape Town?

I would recommend hiking Lion's Head, and also going up Table Mountain with a cable car - just make sure it's a nice clear day, then the view is better. I would also recommend taking a drive to Muizenberg Beach where you will find hundreds of surfers in the water. Cape Point is also definitely worth a visit.

Is the nightlife good in Cape Town? Where is good to go?

Cape town is famous for its nightlife. Long Street is always a favourite. There you will find lots of restaurants, bars, disco's and pubs to choose from.

What advice would you give future students heading to Cape Town?

Prepare to have a very fun time.
