Erasmus Experience in Caen, France.
Why did you choose to go to Caen, France?
I wasn't on Erasmus in Caen, I am French and I studied in Caen for the first two years of my degree so I know the city very well.
How long was your stay? How much financial aid did you receive?
2 years.
What's student life like in Caen?
Caen's student life is very nice, there are a lot of students.
Would you recommend the city and the university to other students?
Yes, I would recommend the city of Caen because it is a very pretty town with lots of things to do. You always feel good in Caen.
What's the food like in this country?
I really like French food. If you don't know much about it don't hesitate to try out and discover something new.
How did you find your accommodation?
I had to get in touch with individuals, but there are also announcements made by the university. In general, one of your parents must act as a guarantor and give a month's rent as a deposit.
What are rent prices like? And costs in general?
Generally accommodation is quite expensive. I had to pay 420 euros a month for a 34m² flat but prices range from 250 to 500 euros according to the size and if you have a flatmate or not. (I would advise having a flatmate to make friends and learn the language).
How was the language learning experience? Did you take any courses organised by the university?
I don't know, you will have to check with the International Relations Service or the School of Modern Foreign Languages.
What is the cheapest way to get to Caen from your hometown?
By train
What places would you recommend for a night out in Caen?
The bars by the port or on rue Ecuyère where there are bars and lots of activity between Thursday and Sunday. The bars close at 1am and then there are the "pubs": l'Excuse et l'Ecume des Nuits (which aren't great). Personally I prefer to stay near the port where you can meet people and party.
If bars aren't for you there is Cargo or Big Band Cafe which put on plenty of concerts.
Where are your favourite places to eat in Cean?
Le Vaugeux is a street full of restaurants. (Sans Gêne in particular).
What cultural spots would you recommend visiting?
The castle, the fine arts museum, the Abbaye aux Dames, the Abbaye aux Hommes, the exhibition park where there is often nice things to look at.
Any advice for future students in Caen?
