Romania: Simplicity makes beauty!

1. The surroundings of my experience

A year ago, I was in Bucharest, the capital of Romania for my masters studies in biotechnology. I chose Romania because when I made the decision to follow a masters semester, it was the only destination where universities still accept students. At the beginning I was very scared because it was the first time that I travelled alone and also, I do not know the local language, Romanian.

2. Arrival

When I arrived in Bucharest to find accommodation, I used estate agents which helped me a lot, also he speaks French and English so the communication with him was very easy. I rented a small apartment in district 6 at 220 euros per month. It was richly furnished and in a quiet and secure area. All amenities are available near the building.

3. Language

The Romanian language is very attractive and very easy to learn but it takes a little time to master it properly. The grammar is close to French. The vocabulary is a mixture of several languages (English, French, German, Portuguese, etc. ). There are language lessons at university, songs and contact with people made it easier for me to learn the language. Now that I can master it and I love it very much.

4. People

The locals are very warm and welcoming. They accept foreigners whatever their origins. Also, they help them integrate. They are simple, cultivated and love life. They do not seek to cause problems or conflicts. Despite the harsh economic conditions, they are always smiling and happy. I have a lot of Romanian friends and we are keeping in touch so far. I had good relations with my neighbours in the building and in the neighbourhood.

5. The standard of living

The standard of living in Romania is average. The prices are low. With a few dozen euros, I manage all of my expenses for the month. The "lei" is the local currency, 1 euro = 4 lei and this is a very important advantage to living in Romania.

6. Internet

Romania has the most fastest internet network in Europe. A 24-hour broadband internet subscription, with no connection problems whatever the weather conditions, costs 7 euros per month.

7. The climate

In Romania, you can distinguish the 4 seasons. Winter is very harsh with the snow which does not stop falling but also when it rains rains. It is very cold. The summer can be also harsh given the significant increase in temperature and continuously.

8. Leisure

There are many public parks and green spaces equipped with football and basketball stadiums. The evenings in Bucharest are very lively. All over the city, there are nightclubs, restaurants and cafes.
