Experience in Bucharest, Romania by Iulian
What is it like to live in Bucharest? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Bucharest is one of the cheapest capitals in Europe. Here, you can find a lot of attractions, such as parties in the old town or walks in Herastrau Park. Walking on a sunny day in Victoria Street will make you feel better. Bucharest is a city where you can find culture, fun and friends.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bucharest?
There are a lot of bars and clubs with discount as well as public transportation and shops. The Romanians are very friendly, they can meet you at the bus stop and talk about various subjects.
How much does it cost to live in Bucharest?
I don't know the statistics but I think you can live really well in Bucharest with 350-400 euros per month.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bucharest? Is there any advice you can give?
It is very hard to find accommodation in legal terms...
You can try to contact one rental appartment agency (agentie de inchiriat apartamente) and speak with the professionals there.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Wow, the food is awesome, but only if you like meat. I think there is meat in every traditional dish. From soup to more complicated dishes like "sarmale", you will love it. Don't be shy, try everything, it will be for sure a new taste!
What places would you recommend visiting in Bucharest?
Well, I recommend going out in the old town. You can find a lot of clubs there. But if you are going out with several friends, you can try to visit other clubs which are scattered in the entire city.
Is it good to eat out in Bucharest? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I love my kitchen!
Is the nightlife good in Bucharest? Where is good to go?
It depends on the kind of clubs you like. You can try Hangover (near the city center), Kulturhaus (the cheapest in Bucharest, also near the city center), Goblin (in the old town, reggae, hip hop), Vintage (old town, I don't really like it but it allows you to discover the romanian beauty). There are also big clubs like One, Bamboo etc...
What advice would you give future students headed to Bucharest?
On one hand, even if it is a stereotype, watch your wallet. There are some Romanians who don't know anything about education and civicism.
On the other hand, be open minded and try to "taste the Romanian style of living". Don't be afraid if someone is talking to you without any reason: we are sociable and polite. You must visit some cities from Romania, like Sibiu, Brasov, Sighisoara. Besides, the beauty of the north of Romania will amaze you. Just try it!
