Erasmus Experience in Bucharest, Romania by Marko
Why did you choose to go to Bucharest, Romania?
Romania wasn't my first option but I never wanted to refuse as I have never been there before.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
Scholarship is one year long and as Erasmus Mundus student (student from Western Balkan) I am receiving 1000e per month. Have in mind that bureaucracy in Romania is really bad, so by now (two and a half months after arriving) I haven't received any money.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Bucharest to other students?
Depends on your expectations, but in my opinion it is worth trying.
What is the food like?
There is a big range of different food, from traditional food up to KFC, Mc Donalts and stuff like that. It is a bit harder to find good restaurant with traditional food but once you find it, you won't be disappointed.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Bucharest?
I got the dorm from my university and all Erasmus students from my University are here, so it is good if you want to meet new people.
How much does it cost to live in Bucharest?
It is pretty cheap. Food and night life are cheap but cigarettes are expensive, if you are a smoker. You can also find not so expensive apartments in the city center.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Language is similar to French and Italian so if you know one of them, you can understand something. There is one class of Romanian language at our University but it is more related to Romanian culture than to language. Just because your University speaks English don't expect other people to speak English.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Bucharest from your city?
The cheapest way to travel to Bucharest is by the plane if you buy tickets on time, if not than go by train.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Bucharest?
There is a Erasmus group on facebook so you can follow them or you can go and explore.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Bucharest in the future?
I'll say it again. Just because your University speaks English don't expect other people to speak English.
