Erasmus Experience in Bucharest, Romania by Jean

What is the student ambiance like in Bucharest?

The student atmosphere in Bucharest is incredible! It’s a city made for students (of which there are many). In terms of living costs I think that Bucharest is one of the cheapest capitals in Europe, which allows foreign students a pretty substantial spending power for going out. There is something to do every night, the city never sleeps. If you’re interested in going out and partying I would absolutely recommend this city.

Did you have any problems finding accommodation in Bucharest?

It all depends on what time of the year you arrive. In September it is very easy to find accommodation right in the middle of the city. If you arrive in January or February it’s a bit more complicated but still possible to sort out. I found a place to stay in February after a week and a half of searching.

What’s the cost of living in Bucharest?

The cost of living in Bucharest is relatively low. It’s “a little bit” more expensive than the rest of Romania but nothing compared to other European cities. With a budget of 500-600 euros per month (including accommodation, internet/telephone bills, and transport) you will be left with enough to go out a lot at nights and go on short weekend trips as well.

What is the cheapest way to get to Bucharest from your home city?

From France I believe air travel is the cheapest.

Which spots would you recommend for partying in Bucharest?

It’s possible to party everywhere in Bucharest. But the old town with its hundreds of bar/clubs and restaurants is the favourite spot for students. In fine weather there are also nice bars and clubs by the lake in the north of the city, which I would strongly recommend. There are also many very pleasant rooftops. There is something for every taste. Bucharest isn’t called the “new Berlin” for nothing.

Any tips for future students going to Bucharest?

Rid yourself of preconceived clichés about Romania and go there without thinking about it too much. This city offers surprises every day and you won’t regret studying there, I promise you! Romanians are very welcoming and have a very competent level of English so don’t worry about that.

The central localization of Bucharest will allow you to travel to all of the surrounding countries, a weekend in Istanbul, in Greece by the Black Sea or in Sofia, Belgrade or even Budapest, and all of this for not much money, make the most of it!
