Erasmus Experience in Bucharest, Romania by İrem
Why did you choose to go to Bucharest, Romania?
Because if you compare Bucharest with different European countries, it's quiet in the morning, alive at night, and cheap. Amazing!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I don't have any scholarship.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bucharest?
Going to school in the morning, sleeping in the evening, going out at night.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Bucharest to other students?
A lot of faculties don't have any English course. Lessons are given in Romanian language. First, you should do some research on the website to know if English courses are available in your faculty.
What is the food like?
To be honest, I'm from Turkey and I really miss Turkish food.
Was it difficult to find your accommodation in Bucharest?
No, they gave me a dormitory immediately. It was very easy.
How much does it cost to live in Bucharest?
It depends what you are looking for.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
When you are from Turkey it's really hard to understand Romanian because we don't have a lot of words in common. But Romanian language has many similar words with Italian, French, Spanish languages. If you come from one of these countries, it will be easy for you to learn Romanian.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel in Bucharest?
Subway is really cheap. I bought an unlimited ticket for 1 month (for students). It's 35 RON (8-9 €). Limitless. It's amazing. And they have metro everywhere.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Bucharest?
Young Erasmus people love "Kulturhaus" which is a club. And then, there is a pub called "Oktoberfest" (yes, the name is very lovely). And these are cheap places where you can drink, have fun, talk with each other, dance.
What about eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Bucharest?
There was an ad for Carul cu Bere (I think this is the right spelling). If you are a student, you can go there between 12 and 6 pm, and you can have a huge meal with beer, only for 12 RON (around 2-3 €).
What are the good cultural sites to visit?
In Bucharest, there are a lot of old buildings but you don't have to "visit" them. You just see them everywhere. That's the plus side of Bucharest.
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Bucharest?
If you like sunny cities, Bucharest is not "the place to be", but if you just want to have fun, this is the best place for you.
