Experience in Brno, the Czech Republic by Ana

What is it like to live in Brno? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

If you're a student, Brno is the city for you. There are parties every day of the week. Besides, it's right in the centre of Europe, which makes it a great place to travel all over and for very cheap.

What is the student lifestyle like in Brno?

Brno is a total university city. It has three universities, each one has its own residences, the university environment is great.

How much does it cost to live in Brno?

Brno is very cheap. If the Czech Republic is cheap, Brno is even cheaper regarding accommodation, transport, living costs in general and travel.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Brno? Do you have any advice?

When the university accepts you, you need to look at which residence belongs to that university and send your paperwork to the right place. You won't have any problems.

What is the food like there? What are some of your favourite dishes?

Personally, I think that this is a weak point that the city has. The traditional food is goulash, which isn't very nice. It's impossible to get fish from the supermarkets.

They have a super calorific diet here and food is accompanied by beer.

Where would you recommend to visit in Brno?

Brno, despite what people might say, isn't ugly at all. It has some very nice buildings and it's definitely worth spending a couple of days here.

The cathedral is very pretty, if you've never been to the one in Prague, there is no point of comparison. The castle is quite interesting to see, too.

And to eat in Brno? What are some of your favourite places to go?

For food, like I said before, I'm not a big fan of the food here, but if I had to recommend somewhere to go, I'd say a medieval place on the most famous square in the city, near Ceska.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Brno?

There are loads of bars and lots of clubs.

Two Faces, Fleda and 7 Heaven are the places where the most parties are held.

Do you have any advice for students coming to Brno in the future?

Don't think twice about coming here, it's a great place to come for your Erasmus, it's a lot better than any capital city. It's totally a university city where you'll never stop having something to do.
