Experience in Brno, Czech Republic by Jan
What is it like to live in Brno? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
A modern, but a little underdeveloped city with nice services. The architecture is alright and there are a few gems here and there. Though some of them might confuse you (like the famous astronomical clock). Probably the higlight of the year is the Christmass market, which really gives Brno a beautiful festive atmosphere.
What is the student lifestyle like in Brno?
It is a city made by students for students. At the beginning of every academic year its population grows by 100 000 people! There are limitless options when it comes to food, coffee, bars and other entertainment. The faculties might be a little old fashioned but the services offered are great - there is a modern non-stop study room, many libraries and nice canteens. JUST PLEASE, BE QUIET IN THE STUDY ROOMS AND LIBRARIES! YOU CAN SOCIALISE ELSEWHERE!
How much does it cost to live in Brno?
It is not as expensive as Prague, but it certainly is not cheap for Czechs. Though if you are a foreigner from western Europe, you will not believe how ridiculously cheap it is (0,5 delicious Pilsner for 1,90 EU?!!).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Brno? Is there any advice you can give?
It is quute difficult to find decent accomodation for a reasonable price. I would avoid the dorms at all costs, especially the cheap ones.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
There is everything, from great tacos to gyros, Neapolitan pizza, Indian food and more!
What places would you recommend visiting in Brno?
I love walking down the pedestrian path alongside the river Svratka.
