Erasmus Experience in Brno, Czech Republic by Nadia
Why did you choose to go to Brno, Czech Republic?
Medical school program!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I pay myself, no scolarships. Around 225 000 czech korunas.
What is the student lifestyle like in Brno?
Depends on which University's student are you I suppose. Masaryk University medical students have a very busy schedule and are mostly in school and/or study outside of school every day (but of course not 24/7).
Would you recommend the city and the University of Brno to other students?
Yes, absolutely. Nice city, perfect for students I would say. Everything is close, affordable and Masaryk University at Bohunice has a very nice and modern campus (very big too)!
What is the food like?
Different types of food. Mostly Czech traditional dishes everywhere, especially for lunch deals in most cafe's. Good and affordable.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Brno?
You have to start looking way in advance if you are planning to get an apartment for or around the school start. Then it is mayhem and even the "not so good" apartments fly off the market really fast. Get a realtor or find an apartment through multiple search engines.
How much does it cost to live in Brno?
Depends where and with how many people you live. Anywhere from 8 thousand korunas and on (without utilities).
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
We are offered the Czech language course which is really informative, now, 3 months after moving here, most of our classmates are able to understand and do simple communication with Czech people on daily basis.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Brno from your city?
Easiest and most economical is to take the Student Agency bus from wherever in the other cities/countries. It is pretty affordable, with a fast and good way to get to Brno. Very nice and well-equipped buses.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Brno?
There are many. Sklizeno for lunch (around campus), Skøg in the city (vegeterian, modern place).
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Brno in the future?
Don't be scared of moving here without ever being here from before. It might seem really scary, but once you get here, I'm pretty sure you will like it. It's a nice cosy city, not too small and not too big. Perfect transport system (tons of trams and buses (no metro though :( ), which takes you everywhere you need to go. There are many students here from different countries, so you will not be all alone :) and most people are nice and helpful if you were to have any troubles.
