Experience in Brighton (United Kingdom), by Lia
What is it like to live in Brighton? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It is an amazing adventure to live in Brighton. When you walk around the city you can feel the difference in the air of how open minded and embracing it is of all cultures and people- they do not call it the gay capital of England for no reason.
There is a huge collection of interesting shops and markets of all kinds - retro clothes stalls, masses of vegan supermarkets and restaurants, and a whole load of bustling, kooky clubs and bars all around the city and on the seafront.
Brighton is a hub of activism and political activity, you know that it is a place that sparks social change that ripples throughout the rest of the country.
There are talented musicians that you pass on almost every street. You live by the sea, you are minutes away from the natural beauty of the Sussex countryside with high up hills and humbling views and there is art all over the streets and walls of Brighton.
I love Brighton, when I started University at Sussex and became a Brightonian I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be at exactly the right time. Being in Brighton is like returning to a home you always wanted but never knew you had!
What is the student lifestyle like in Brighton?
Brilliant. Brighton is an exciting place where you can always feel change in the air. It is a great place for a night out, you can party at the popular clubs on the beach or drink in an indie pub in the laines. There are plenty of shops, good transport links to London, Gatwick and other areas of the country and there is a vibrant student footprint left on the city.
How much does it cost to live in Brighton?
Brighton is expensive. Renting a house while living as a student is expensive, especially if you are renting closer to the city centre, it can be considerably cheaper to live closer to the downs.
Going out can be quite expensive but there are lots of student deals and there are many bars and clubs that you do not have to/ pay low entry to. Buses are expensive also, but food shopping and other living costs are average I would say.

Hey Simon!
I guess it depends what you're looking for, but there are plenty of bars, restaurants and clothes shops in the city, it is a busy place so I do think it is pretty easy to get a job as a barman or sales assistant in a retail position. I am not sure whether that's the kind of work you're looking for though so hopefully it is and that's helpful!
It is quite easy to find a shared house, better to look on the university websites forums - Sussex and Brighton, as people often post on there saying they're looking for someone to join them in renting!
Good luck with everything, and feel free to ask me anything else if those answers didn't help!
You're welcome!
