How is Brighton?

Brighton is a coastal city in the south of England. It's the city known for its pride and LGBT+ visibility, so prepare to be yourselves without anyone judging you.

How is Brighton?

  • Population: It's not quite London, mostly as it's not as crowded, but there are enough people. Above all, there are loads of students and young people who come to work, but the average age is probably 30, which is slightly older. You'll always find people in the street, whatever the hour.

  • Studies: If you're students, you have 2 different universities to choose from. University of Sussex and Brighton University. I was in the latter, on the Falmer campus (there are different campus' distributed throughout the city, and depending on what you study will determine which one you study in). You'll find everything you need on whichever campus you go to. They'll have a university shop, various cafes (people are super addicted to coffee here), canteens where there are places to eat something, a library, a computer room, etc. And what I liked the most were the associations and help groups they offered, both for students with difficulties and for people with problems (like depression, anxiety, discrimination... ). I will make another post about the uni if you'd like me to! If you're not students and you want to study, you can also choose different branches of "college".

  • Work: I know that some of you will only be coming to work. Finding a job is easier than accommodation or a flat. I will give you some advice for looking for work in another post. And, students, you know that there are a load of part-time job offers, to divide your time between working and studying, so you can afford all the parties and cravings.
  • Accommodation: If the university doesn't offer you any, I swear this is the most complicated and difficult thing you'll have to do. It's expensive, and it's difficult. You have to bear in mind not to be timid. A post dedicated excessively to this topic will be published.

  • People: You're going to meet people of all nationalities, genders, likes and dislikes. There is an incredible diversity and in general they're quite open, so you won't have any problem socialising or creating inseparable friendship groups. Believe me. And you'll be able to share culture, music, food... It's great.
  • Language: If you don't have a clue how to speak English, try it. In general, people are quite patient. There are a few jobs that will hire you even if you don't speak any, as long as you're not in the public eye... Hahaha. But the best way to learn English is to throw yourself into it and start listening. With regards to the rest, make friends with other nationalities, you're going to learn English, Polish, Turkish, Italian, Mongolian, Chinese, French, Aramaic if needs be.

  • Weather: It's a damp coastal city, and it's nippy. During the winter a whole week can go by with torrential rain and suddenly there'll be a day where everyone goes out in short sleeves (I wore a cardigan... British people love to be extra... ). Now, during the summer, they told me that the same thing happens. The week before I arrived (in May), it rained cats and dogs. But I arrived before yesterday and I got really burnt on the beach.
  • Transport: Important. Brighton has a very good transport system, with trains and buses. Although during special holidays EVERYTHING stops, so be careful with this. I will write a post giving you some advice about spending the least amount of money as possible.

How is Brighton?

And well... This is where I'll sum up. In the following posts I will be more specific about each one, especially accommodation, transport, work and studies.

I hope that you have enjoyed this blog and that it provides some help. For more requests or questions, message me.

Hugs and kisses!
