Erasmus Experience in Bratislava, Slovakia by Sven
Why did you choose to go to Bratislava, Slovakia?
I choose Bratislava because it is the capital of a former eastern Europe country and I would like to see how it is today. The situation of Bratislava in the centre of Europe makes me also choose this city.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I receive €1745 in two times (75% one month after my arrival and 25% one month after my departure).
What is the student lifestyle like in Bratislava?
I think the student lifestyle is more relaxed as in France. There are sofas is the faculty to relax and drink a coffee and the atmosphere to study is really good.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Bratislava to other students?
I recommend Bratislava to future Erasmus students who would like to visit some new countries (Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic... ). The nightlife is also really nice (there are many nightclubs in the city and also in front of the dormitory).
What is the food like?
The food is a little different as in France, the price in the restaurants are lower as in France. One speciality is the Bryndzové Haluzky, it is really excellent and you'll have to taste it!
How much does it cost to live in Bratislava?
I choose to live in a private room in the centre and not in the dormitory. My apartment is really good and I pay €400 /month. If you choose to live in the dormitory, it is approximately €80/month and you share your room with 1 or 2 other students.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
There are students courses that give 5 credits. The language is really different as mine (French) but after 3 courses, I know how to introduce myself.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Bratislava from your city?
I live in Eastern France so I choose to travel from Geneva to Vienna with Easyjet. I took a bus from Vienna to Bratislava. Vienna airport is really close to Bratislava so many people choose this airport to travel from/to Bratislava. The price of the flight is approximately €40 without luggage and the bus costs €5.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Bratislava?
There are many bars to drink beer or other alcohol. For me, the best is the Bar On. There are also many nightclubs. The club is nice but it's more expensive as other nightclubs. There is also a nightclub on a boat in Danube.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Bratislava?
I think you have to taste Slovak food. There are several "Slovak pubs" which are not expensive and you can taste the Haluzky or the Goulash.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The city center, the castle and the Slavin.
