My latest restaurant discoveries in Bratislava

My latest restaurant discoveries in Bratislava.

Hello everyone! Today I am bringing you a new post in which I want to show you my latest food discoveries in Bratislava, where I am currently living. Last year I already wrote a post with some restaurants that I like, but here I am bringing you some that I have tried recently. Whoever knows me well will know that I love trying local food places. For this reason, here are the restaurants which I think are well worth trying in Bratislava. Let's go!

Los Mexikas

It is a Mexican restaurant which is in the centre, a stone's throw away from the main square, where the old town hall is located. It was my first time eating at a Mexican restaurant and I loved it. Luckily, because it is enough to have one bad experience to think that you don't like that kind of food. We went on a Tuesday at dinnertime, the day after was a holiday, and we had tacos, burritos and gringas. The staff were all super friendly, especially the waitress, a lady a bit older than us who served us with a smile. Also, next to us there was a really big table with lots of customers and because they were going to take a while to bring us our food, they gave us one of the extra tacos to stave off our hunger a bit. When they bought us the main dishes, the truth is that the burritos were super tasty, with rice, beans and either pork or chicken. They also had vegetarian options, in fact, the gringas that we ordered had cheese and vegetables as ingredients. The truth is that I can't say whether I preferred the gringas or burritos more. It was a good choice to ask for both.

With these two dishes and the nachos to share between 5, I was left really full, with no space left for dessert. In addition to that, there are fruit juices available which are made out of tropical fruits like guava, sour soup or mango. The price is good since the portions were quite big.

As for the actual place, it is very interesting. It has a very cheerful and colourful decor, with symbols of Mexican culture, as well as a map drawn on the wall with doodles which represent something typical from each reason. And of course, if you are worried about spice, they have dishes which contain zero chilli so it is perfect. In short, I recommend it.

Bistro St. Germain

This restaurant is one part cafe, one part restaurant. I will leave you photos of the decor below since it is very welcoming since it looks like a bookshop.

Really, there are some people who go there to have a coffee, relax and read a book. We went there for dinner. We had a hamburger with guacamole which was super good.

They also have tasty lemonades. The atmosphere is really peaceful and I loved the soft lights there. They also have a great dessert selection. They have all kinds of tarts, including vegan tarts and raw ones, look how good they look!

As for its location, it is in the centre, very close-by to Dunajska street. Also, basically next to the restaurant, there is a cinema which plays as many independent films as it does Hollywood ones. For me it is the perfect plan for a Saturday: cinema and dinner.

Funki Punki pancakes

Completely changing the kind of food, I want to tell you about this local which serves typical crepes, both sweet and savoury. It is in the centre, on Klariska Street, and it is quite a small local so a lot of the times that we go we have to wait outside because it is full. The wait is worth it since the crepes are really good. My favourite ones are the lentil ones with Indian spices (I know it sounds weird for a crepe, but it is really good), the bolognese one and the hummus and cucumber one. Also, if you don't feel like eating, they also have a menu which has different kinds of coffee and tea. The decor is a bit vintage, with a bike stuck to the wall and the walls covered with murals with drawings of different birds. I really like it and it is in the centre, so you have no excuse not to visit.

La Strega

Its name translates to the "witch. " It is an Italian restaurant, with very varied and delicious pizzas. My favourite one is the one with raw prosciutto and almost every time that I go, I order it. As they say: "don't change a good thing. " They have a super big oven where they cook the pizzas and you can really tell this by the flavour of the dough. The oven is so big that sometimes I think that it is sufficient to heat up the whole place, seeing as it isn't very big, which makes it very cosy. They also have good desserts, like cannolli or tiramisu. Another good thing is that they have a delivery service, so if one day you don't feel like cooking and you fancy a pizza, as you already know, call La Strega and you will have your dish waiting at your front door. Also, I think that if you order it, the total price works out cheaper.

Dunajsky Pivovar

It is located on the riverbank opposite to Bratislava castle. The strange thing about this restaurant is that it is a boat located on the Danube river. This is where it's name comes from, as "Dunaj" means "Danube" in Slovakian. The cool thing about this bar are the views since you can admire the castle at the top of the hill and the whole old part of Bratislava, which is on the riverbank in front, along with the bridges and the UFO in the distance. I have been there several times and I have ordered a pork joint which was really tasty, as well as one of the best burgers that I have ever had in my life, and mushroom risotto.

It was all really good and the only gripe I have is that the last time we went they took quite a long time to serve us, I suppose it was because it was quite full.

As for the second part of its name, "pivovar"; "pivo" means bear in Slovakian, thus this place is also known for offering good beers. In fact, the enormous metal barrels are in the middle of the bar and even though it might shock you when you first see them there, the truth is that it makes up part of the decoration. I also have to say that Dubajsky Pivovar has a hotel service for you to spend the night. It must be very lovely to wake up and see the river, though I imagine it would be quite expensive.

Flagship

It is one of the most famous restaurants in Bratislava where they serve typical Slovakian food like the well-known halusky (thick soft noodles or dumplings). The interesting thing about this restaurant is that it was formerly a theatre. When you go in, you can see the shape of the theatre and as you can imagine, it is very big. Most of the tourists who want to try typical Slovakian dishes come here. I went a couple of times to try halusky. For those who don't know, it is a kind of gnocchi which is made up of flour, water and potato and on top they have the famous Bryndza cheese, which is also typical of Slovakia. Some have little bits of bacon on the top. It is a calorie bomb but honestly if they make it well, it is good. They also have the typical garlic and cheese soup which is really tasty. They serve it in a bowl of bread which has the centre removed beforehand. When I go to this place because my friends or family have come to visit me and we fancy having something lighter, I usually order a dish with rice and mozzarella. It sounds simple but the truth is that with all of the spices it turns out delicious. If you are interested in Slovakian gastronomy, this is the place to go.

Primo Amore

This is another quite good Italian restaurant in Bratislava. It is really close to Obchonda street, which is one of the most famous streets because it is full of different shops. When we went, there was a really big table full of Italian people, it looked like a company dinner. It is simply for these intimacies that it is good. They have lots of different kinds of pizza, in fact, we were looking at the menu for like 10 minutes because we didn't know what to order. As for the menu, I have to talk about the pasta that they had with truffle, tartufo and the tiramisu, they are really good. In short, it is always great to eat Mediterranean food.

La Cava Barcelona

This restaurant is in the old quarter, near to Obchodna. The boss is Spanish and thus the menu is too. We had homemade croquetas, patatas bravas, tumaca bread (with tomato and olive oil) and pannacotta for dessert. It isn't the cheapest place in Bratislava, but it is worth going to if you like Spanish food and you really miss it. Honestly, when you are inside the restaurant it doesn't feel like you are in Central Europe, but more that you are in the South due to the atmosphere that is exuded there. Even though I didn't try the wine, my friends say that it is really good. I'll leave you the photo.

And that is everything! I am glad to have finished off my previous list of restaurants in the Slovakian capital with the ones that I have left you here. I hope that it was useful and that you have discovered some new places to eat at. Thank you for reading.
