Romania road trip: Brașov Christmas market

Brasov Christmas market and its landmarks

After we get to know the wonderful accommodation where we would have to stay for one night in Brasov and, even if we just want to make ourselves comfortable here after a day full of travelling, we are still hungry for only eating in the back of the trunk, thus we decide to get out and have some pizza.

Finding a place to eat 

We search for pizza restaurants on Google but somehow we end up in the Christmas market first where our eyes are caught by the many lights and decorations. Bu we have to eat and since we are in the Piața Sfatului, the main square, there are many restaurants around it. We start looking at each of the menus to find a place that suits everybody’s taste and budget.

Not the best pizza I had 

Finally, we have dinner at a trattoria located in The Council Square and which I don’t remember the name of, but unfortunately it was not the best because we had to wait some time for the food to be served and not all of us were pleased and satisfied with what they got. The employees were very nice though and the atmosphere was relaxing too. My vegan pizza was not the best, being a bit devoid of vegetables, but at the same time I was so hungry I could eat anything.

Out in the night and in The Brașov Christmas market 

We get out in The Christmas market and slowly start to walk through all of the little houses store. The market here is definitely smaller than the one in Bucharest, but the overall place is still very well put together and the appearance of it is much more beautiful due to the specific colorful houses surrounding the main square.

The Christmas market is placed in a suitable landscape. What I want to say is that Brasov and especially its historical central area looks great anyway without all of the lights and decorations which are now creating an even more pleasant facet.

The Council Square

Actually, during the Middle Ages, The Council Square, which is today the main attraction of Brasov, this place being the first to go to when you come visiting the city, used to also be the spot where fairs were organized, here coming then merchants both from inside the country and outside of it from Hungary and Germany. The fair vibe is still awake and alive.

Christmas spirit is here!

The atmosphere is charming and magical and it makes us to feel the Christmas spirit for sure. From down here we can see one of Brasov’s landmarks – The Brasov sign is lightened up in blue and stands proudly on the Mount Tămpa. I am telling my friends that tomorrow we are going up there!

In The Christmas market we can feel the sweet and spicy smell of the traditional all time present mulled wine and of the kurtos kalacs. Among the small stores are found handcrafted tree decorations, handmade accessories, jewelries, socks, sweatshirts, so everybody can find a gift for all tastes.

The Council House: a building with a long history 

Alongside the lightened tall Christmas tree, a building that outstands is The Council House, another landmark of the city which can be seen from Mount Tampa too.

The architecture, representing the baroque style, is simple, but yet beautiful, the monument dating back to the Middle Ages, but suffering many changes and transformations over the years, thus, remaining still the most significant historical building of the city. Nowdays, the Council House hosts the permanent exhibition of the County History Museum.

Finishing the first day of our road trip adventure inside Romania 

We cannot stay longer in the Christmas market because all of us are so tired after the long travel day we just had. We started early in Bucharest, stopped in Sinaia to visit the Peleș Castle and in Bran for seeing Dracula’s castle  - you can read the articles of these two places by clicking the blue writing - and then driving in Brașov for new places to experience. So, we are going to take a better look at the Council House tomorrow, in the day light, when Brașov is waiting for us to explore its streets and mountain.
