Experience in Bragança, Portugal by Cecília

What is it like to live in Bragança? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Living in Bragança has its moments. As long as there are students it's the best place to live but when the students go on vacations there is not much happening. Don't get me wrong it's still a great place to be and yes, most definitely I recommend it. Why? Well, because it's a little city, everything is close by and the people are warm and caring who will help you even if you're a stranger to them.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bragança? Is there any advice you can give?

I believe accommodation is the easiest thing to find because there are advertisements everywhere around and also the housing agencies are all next to each other and they can find houses of every kind and for all prices.

My advice is to make use of services of the housing agencies. People working there are really nice and trustworthy.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is amazing! There is this food called Alheiras and it melts in your mouth, it's so good! Another typical dish is Posta Mirandes and the fact that that you have to taste it is almost a rule.

What places would you recommend visiting in Bragança?

I recommend you to visit the center of Bragança, the castle, the Saint which is a spot on top of a mountain with a church where you can see the whole city. There are tables and seats to have a picnic surrounded by nature which makes it the best place to relax. I also recommend you to visit the Polis, the Theater and the Cathedral.

The last but not least place you should visit is the Natural Park of Montesinho, if you really enjoy nature.

Is it good to eat out in Bragança? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yes, it is. My favourite places are: Pastas Café which is a place where you can eat all kind of pasta (Spaghetti and such), Sandwich is a restaurant across the street from the Superior School of Education and the last Luna for pizzas.

Is the nightlife good in Bragança? Where is good to go?

Nightlife in Bragança is amazing and that's why it's called "The Sin City" by the students. What happens in Bragança, stays in Bragança! There are loads of bars to go out to with friends and have fun plus everything is so cheap. There are only 3 nightclubs but it's more than enough because you can go there every day of the week.

I'll explain, if you just want to go for a coffee, I recommend Metro Bar, Petrotuela, Inova Café, Urban Bar, Under Bar or Bunker bar. If you intend to stay all night, you can start with one of the places above and then go to the nightclubs which are: Moda, Mercado and last but not least Havana Club. Normally for the nightclubs it goes like this: Monday - Moda; Tuesday- Havana club; Wednesday- Mercado; Thursday- Moda (again but for me it's the best day and the best nightclub a lot of alternative music is played); Friday- Havana Club and last day to party Saturday - Mercado (attention! girls do not pay). Only on Sundays none of them is open so it's like a resting day. It's the day in which the students get back for weekend.

What advice would you give future students headed to Bragança?

Future students! Please, try not to get lost in Bragança and I'm not talking about the streets but studies! Bragança can be a little distracting and you do not want to fail at school and believe me if you are not strong enough to resist all the partying, it will be hard! One other thing, the weather in Bragança is said to be 6 months winter and 3 months hell on earth so you can imagine that it's a bit of extreme. It is either cold to death or too hot, there is nothing in between.
