Erasmus Experience in Bochum, Germany by Saddam Hossain
Why did you choose to go to Bochum, Germany?
Because I've applied for a master's degree at the RUB, which is in Bochum
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I didn't come to the RUB on a scholarship, I came to study with my own money. But scholarship is really good because the government itself supports you.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bochum?
The students' lifestyle is good and different.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Bochum to other students?
As far as I know, it is one of the most beautiful places in Germany and the RUB is among the top 300 universities in the world and I was lucky enough to be accepted for my application at this university.
What is the food like?
There is a wide variety of food and drinks that are delicious and what I like most is the pizza.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Bochum?
I'm trying to find some accommodation, but I can't find it yet. In RUB I could find some place to live, I have filled out an application online but there is no guarantee that I will be able to find something or at least that there will be a loss of students and apartments at the same time.
How much does it cost to live in Bochum?
Approximately 600 to 700 euros per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Honestly, the German language is difficult, but it becomes easier if you take a language course in the RUB; I have enrolled in the B1 and B2 intensive courses.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Bochum from your city?
I live in Kabul and the best way to get from Kabul to Bochum is to fly from Kabul first to Turkey or Dubai and then to Bochum directly.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Bochum?
I have visited all areas of Bochum during my stay here in Germany, especially at night.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Bochum?
I don't know much about their restaurants, but from what I've heard there, there are the best restaurants.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
For me, I think every place in Bochum.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Bochum in the future?
Bochum is the best city for its excellent climate, its people, its culture, its transportation and for being a pleasant city for students. The RUB is among the top 10 in Germany for its wonderful student facilities, several faculties and the price of the language course is cheap.
