Baking biscuits with ESNBochum

Among the many activities and events that ESN Bochum organised, there was also an event to bake biscuits all together. There was a building in Europa Haus - where some of the dormitories were - which was big enough and had all the facilities to allow us Erasmus students to bake biscuits. We actually had a lot of parties and typical evenings there too, but I'll write about it in another piece of writing.

It was a Sunday, nobody had classes, so me and my friends decided to go. But we had to decide the day before, because we had to buy the ingredients. So we went to REWE on Saturday and bought loads of white sugar, brown sugar, flour, chocolate chips, lactose-free milk and some eggs. We also bought some cookie cutters shaped in christmas-ish figures, like Santa, a Christmas tree, stars, hearts, but also moons, and a big one that resembled a fish.

We woke up really late on Sunday and hurried up to be there in time. Once we got at Europa Haus we realised that apart from us there were not so many people. We have a saying, in Italian, that states "pochi ma buoni" - it means that not necessarily "the more the merrier" works out for every situation. In fact, a translation would be "we're few but we're the good ones". Anyway, we were not more than 20/25 people, including the ESN guys.

When we arrived they had already started, so we put our ingredients in the mix and we joined them. We decided to make different pastries. One plain, with flour and white sugar, one with chocolate chips, one other with brown sugar. Somebody had brought cocoa powder, so we also baked chocolate cookies.

The ESN guys provided us with sprinkles and other decorations, and we had fun decorating our biscuits. We even had chocolate topping and several food colourings, so we gave way to our creativity and that's the result.

I personally, together with a friend of mine, shaped what I called "LGBT+ Santa". Just looking at it, makes me so happy! So I decided to share it with you all. Here it is.

Isn't it beautiful? I really like it!

After baking the biscuits and decorating them - I have to admit, we even ate some - we enveloped them in small packages. We were to give the packages to somebody as gifts, so we took a few and distributed them to our friends.

In the end we spent a nice afternoon in a happy atmosphere - typical of Christmas - and we had fun. Besides, I really appreciated the effort that ESN guys put in planning activities to make international students at their ease and make them feel welcome. This was one of those activities that made us share a happy moment with people we didn't know. Plus, we baked biscuits and biscuits always make people happy. So, thank you ESN Bochum!
