'We cannot stop here, this is cat country!'
Welcome, lovely people!
Well, this is the inspiring love story of an adventurous young lady from the heart of Europe and the land of odd-eyed Turkish Angora Cats.
My name is Nika and I haven't the slightest idea what exactly I am looking for here in Ankara, Turkey, which is a perfect excuse to share my personal (therefore mainly subjective) experiences with people who might also be interested in country-hopping and stuff.
Let's see, where do I start?
Approximately seven weekends ago I lost nearly 250 euro in a pub; getting hopelessly wasted and leaving my bag behind just because I insisted a handsome blonde dude on dancing with me on the street, definitely was one of the dumbest decisions I have ever made.
By the end of the night I was taken to the nearest hostel accompanied by seven dutch fellas who, for some reason, decided to take good care of me - in the morning they even paid for my train ticket because I was still stone-broke and having a terrible hangover (I am mentioning this only to make you notice how unbelievably lucky I am when it comes to relying on strangers).
In the meantime, one of the doormen called my parents that luckily they have found my bag. I arrived back at the pub quite late, so I had no choice but to wander around for a while until I could catch the first train in the morning. The fact that all my money was gone did not surprise me at all, I am terrible at managing my own expenses.
During that night I met some Italian coglione who bought me a mojito while trying to convince me that I already have fallen in love with him. I told him I am definitely not into love affairs tonight but drinking as much as possible - at this point he looked at me, took the glass out of my hand and simply walked away. What a weirdo!
Since I was still standing there without money, I could only afford a glass of tap water; I grabbed it and went downstairs. People were shouting and dancing around me while I was sitting in a corner alone, thinking about what possibly went wrong with my life. By that time it was already quite dark down there, so when this guy tapped my shoulder, he may have thought I would really like to be friends with him. I was ignoring him for a while, until he started shouting into my ear.
I don’t remember exactly what he was talking about but soon enough he spilled a lonely beer right onto my dress, at which point I decided to end this miserable game and leave. He followed me. I went upstairs to look for a cigarette and he asked me if I wanted something to drink. I said no, dude, I only need a cigarette, thank you. He then smiled at me and said he’s got one - lucky for me, he turned out to be a chain smoker.
After finishing that cigarette I instantly found him much more sympathetic and we started exchanging thoughts about… well, pretty much everything. He said he is Turkish, studying to be a doctor and is having a great time in Budapest with two of his dearest friends, as part of their trip across Europe. I was slightly impressed (mainly because he looked like a Turkish version of the young Johnny Depp and spoke decent English) and decided to join him and his friends outside. It happened on Monday night and by the time we finally managed to say goodbye to each other, it was already Wednesday.
To cut a long and touching story short, I promised him I would pay him a visit as soon as possible, and three weeks later I was already holding a ticket for a four-week-long adventure somewhere in Turkey, hoping that he is not married yet, nor that I would eventually be sold for a thousand camels.
And this is how it all started.
