Actually, saying Northern Italy is a bit wrong, but I can tell you how to travel throughout Lombardy region for only fourteen euros and ninety cents a day.

Lombardia.

Lombardy is the territory colored in red. Its "Capital" city is Milan. The other major cities are:

  • Bergamo;
  • Brescia;
  • Como;
  • Cremona;
  • Lecco;
  • Lodi;
  • Mantova;
  • Monza - Brianza;
  • Pavia;
  • Sondrio;
  • Varese.

Did you know what you can reach any of these cities (and many little villages) for only fourteen euros and ninety cents a day?

Trenitalia Daily Pass.

I can not remember the exact name of the pass you have to purchase, but it is something like "Biglietto Ferroviario Giornaliero Della Lombardia" which basically stands for Daily Train Ticket Within Lombardy Region. I believe you can not find the ticket on self-service machines, you have to go to a Biglietteria or to a kiosk close to the station. You actually save money, because when I bought it I went from Milan to Sondrio early in the morning and then went back to Milan later in the day. If instead of buying the daily pass I would have bought a ticket for each ride I would have spent almost twenty euros, so I saved five euros that I spent on Aperitivo instead, I think that was very smart to do, lol.

Getaway from the City.

You may think that in the case I just brought up I could have spent the five euros more because it is not a big deal, but what if you want to stop in more than one place? For example, there was this one time when I departed from Milan and stopped in different places along Lake Como, I was on Lecco's side and I stopped in Piona and Bellano before going back home. It is very easy to do and it saves time. There are some places where the stations are so small that you can not even buy a ticket, so if you have a pass already in your hand, that makes everything easier. You just scan it once and do not have to worry anymore for the rest of the day, you just show it to whoever checks your ticket on board the train.

Normally, I think that people do the following:

  • Milano Cadorna Station -> Como Lago Nord and back;
  • Milano Central Station -> Brescia and back;
  • Milano Central Station -> Sondrio and back;

But even if you do not go back, and have to stay perhaps in Edolo, you can depart from Milan, stop in Brescia and visit the city and then take a train to go to Edolo. I am pretty sure it is still cheaper to do so.

Anyways there are many itineraries you can create according to what you want to see and do, but it is nice that there is this option.
