How not to deal with a very down day

So we all know it will come eventually, a day where you just feel utterly rubbish. For me that day came on Monday, I can’t tell you why, although talking to my friends we decided that perhaps it was a comedown from my trip home and then to Portugal. But when I woke up I just hated everything and everyone and wanted to cry then get angry for wanting to cry. It was a vicious circle and as the day wore on it only got worse. I realise in retrospect that I did absolutely everything wrong to resolve this awful feeling.

First wrong turn was watching Grey’s Anatomy, yes, I do love this television series, but it is god-awfully depressing even at the best of time, so that did nothing to lift my spirits, instead I just lay on the sofa wallowing in my pit of despair (it may sound a little dramatic to you, and totally irrational but that’s how it felt). I was too lazy to eat much which probably didn’t help. Then I just decided not to go to bed, instead I stayed on the sofa from lunchtime until the early hours of the morning, watching greys anatomy and at times having a rant with my friends about how bad I felt, which made me feel better for a while but not long. They were great, very supportive and even managed to make me laugh.

By 3am in the morning I had started browsing the internet for wedding venues and planning different weddings for different countries. I knew at this point I had hit rock bottom, how pathetic! So I wandered around a bit listening to the rain and the wind howling at the window until I eventually got into bed at 5.30am, optimistically thinking I might make it to my 9am class. I woke up at 2.30pm the next day and felt a lot better. I don’t know what happened but I went a little bit loony there for a while. What I should have done was go out and be pro-active, so unless you want to sit at home and wallow, that would be my best advice to you! Also don’t worry – everyone feels pants at some point on Year Abroad, no matter how much of an amazing time you are having.
