Indian Maharaja train  marked the entry of private players in the luxury train tour segment. It was launched in September 2009  and was run by Travel Corporation of India (TCI).

The two week long itineraries of this Indian luxury train- Delhi to Mumbai and Mumbai to Delhi- travels the similar destination in a vice-versa angle. Now, you must  be thinking how would these two Indian Maharaja itineraries benefit the first time traveler in India. As per my understanding, the luxury train journey has been packaged in such a way that the tourist can get to know about royal past and cultural heritage of India. Obviously, you’ll have to have a particular proclivity and passion for heritage monuments and history of India.

The 8 days and 7 nights journey of the Indian Maharaja covers three different Indian states- Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Each of the destinations covered in this  state put forth architectural marvels of three different cultures- Rajputana, Buddhist and Mughal. In terms of heritage, the repertoire of Rajasthan hardly has any competitor. The state abounds with an array of forts, palaces that were once the private abodes of erstwhile Rajputana rulers. In addition to these forts and palaces, the state has several colorful bazaars, fairs and festivals. The Indian Maharaja train covers Udaipur, Sawai Madhopur and Jaipur in Rajasthan.

In Maharashtra, the train takes you to the rock-cut caves of Ajanta and Ellora which teems with mural paintings and sculptured art. An in-depth knowledge of the Buddha’s past lives, as mentioned in the Jataka tales,  can be derived from the wall paintings and sculptures present in the Ajanta caves. On the other hand, Ellora Caves stands as a perfect testimony to the harmony between Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

Last but not the least, there is Agra and Fatehpur Sikri, where you can witness the orthodox elements of Mughal architecture such as dome, Char Bagh style garden and archetype designs. The week long journey on board Indian Maharaja begins at $595 on twin sharing basis. All said and done. The post says a lot about the cultural benefits a traveler can attain from this 8 days and 7 night journey.
