Graduate programs

Writing and Journalism
Some graduate programs are intended primarily as preparation for news careers, while others prepare journalism teachers, researchers and theorists, and advertising and public relations workers. Examples of journalism courses are introductory mass media, basic reporting and copy editing, history of journalism, and press law and ethics.

Increasingly, technical writing requires a degree in, or some knowledge about, a specialized field—for example, engineering, business, or one of the sciences. Knowledge of a second language is helpful for some positions. A graduate degree may help those looking to advance more quickly.

History
Teaching History is one of the main careers available to graduates of History programs.Permanent positions at major colleges and universities require candidates to have at least a Master's degree, preferably a Ph.D. However, graduates of History programs may also have careers in Foreign Service, Historic Preservation, Politics, Civil Service, and Archival or Museum Work.

Graduate universities typically offer degrees such as the Ph.D., M.A., and M.S. Most doctoral programs emphasize development of a body of historical knowledge and the ability to perform the scholary research and writing necessary to advance. History graduate students also have opportunities to become graduate teaching assistants.

Computer Science
Computer science careers are distinguished by the higher level of theoretical expertise and innovation applied to complex problems and the creation or application of new technology.

Most computer scientist positions require a Ph.D. degree, as their main job function is research. For database administrator and network systems and data communication analyst positions, employers increasingly prefer applicants with a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) with a concentration in information systems, as more firms move their business to the Internet.

The areas of computer science research range from complex theory to hardware design to programming-language design. Some researchers work on multidisciplinary projects, such as developing and advancing uses of virtual reality, extending human-computer interaction, or designing robots. They may work on design teams with electrical engineers and other specialists.

Business
The most popular careers in Business include Management Consulting, Investment Banking, Private Equity, Venture Capital, Financial Analysis, Sales & Trading, Marketing, and general Management.

Many employers in private industry generally seek individuals with a master’s degree in business administration or a related discipline. Common fields of study include business, management, accounting, marketing, economics, statistics, computer and information science, or engineering.
