Glow, Eindhoven
19th November 2012
On Friday I was just having a rummage through the depths of my inbox when I chanced upon an email about the ‘Glow’ event in Eindhoven. With two evenings left in which to visit, I quickly messaged one of my friends who I thought would enjoy it too. I was chuffed when she said she was free the following evening.
So the Saturday night came and my housemate (who I had also roped in to come) and I trooped off to the train station to meet my Aussie buddy and then head to Eindhoven.
The train journey was affordable as I was able to be a guest on my housemates train pass. There is a young person’s discount card available in the Netherlands but you must have a Dutch bank account to apply for one. Never fear! If you do manage to get a card, you can travel with three friends who can also get a discount.
It took about an hour to get to Eindhoven which was a nice amount to time to have a chat about plans for the rest of our time here in the Netherlands. When we arrived, we headed to the tourism office which unfortunately was closed! So we decided to follow the crowds…
We came across a pub offering a ‘Glow menu’ we thought ‘yes, these will be the people to ask where the Glow art trail is.’ But no, the advice was to follow the crowds! You would think that if your pub was part of the event then you would tell your staff about it!
We followed the crowds through the modern and rather architecturally pleasing city center, coming across one or two light related installations. Finally, we stumbled across the ‘Glow’ Information booth where we bought a brochure on the city center wide exhibition of light related installations.
On the hour round walk through the city we saw around twenty impressive light shows. From glowing chanting heads to a kind of psychedelic human car wash. There were also plenty of bars and cafes open for the evening offering ‘glow’wine (or mulled wine to all you guys). There was a really lovely party atmosphere in and around the walk which made it all in all a fantastic spur of the moment night out.
