First days Back Home
I arrived back at home, very proud of myself for managing to fit everything that I needed into just hand luggage. I had worn warm clothes as my dad had warned me of the below freezing temperatures and so was roasting by the time I made it to my dad’s car as the temperature was hovering around 10 degrees Celsius. I was thrilled to have mobile internet back in my life again, as this is something I haven’t had in Cádiz, but being the cool kid that I am my main concern when I got home (once I had finished my emotional reunion with my dog Bramble) was dying my hair. Yes, I know this makes me a terrible person, not wanting to see friends and family first, but I have missed ginger hair dye. After my hair was done it was time to get dressed for the night as I was invited to a party to celebrate one my best friend’s wedding / 50thbirthday, he got married in November in Kenya so obviously not many people were there apart from his family. It was great that his party coincided with my return as it would mean that I got to see lots of my friends all at once.
It was a great night, in a local church hall with a DJ and buffet and bar, followed by some of us heading out to the local town centre to continue the festivities. Santa even came into the club and gave us a free bottle of champagne, it was like I hadn’t been gone! But I did get a bit over excited when one of the songs that is often played in the clubs in Cádiz came on in the club, no one really understood what was going on. When I finally crawled back home mum had done her traditional preparation of my room for when I’m drunk, put a big glass of water by my bed, along with a bucket – just in case and of course slipped a hot water bottle into my bed for me. She is such a sweetheart! It was very nice to have someone to look after me for a change, rather than me waking up in a mess the next day. So my first day went by very fast, that’s one thing I can guarantee about any time spent at home during your Erasmus year – It will fly by!
My dad had taken a few days off work after I arrived home, which was lovely as my dad never takes time off work for anything, so that was really cute. I spent Sunday with my family, my mum made my favourite Sunday Lunch which she knows I have been really missing, and my nan came over so we had a big catch up, I only get to speak to her occasionally on Skype because she only goes on it when she comes over to my parents house. The next couple of days were spent mainly with my mum shopping, as she is physically handicapped so can’t get out much she has really missed me being at home and taking her out of the house. Although it was really lovely to spend time with my mum it also made me feel guilty for leaving her for so long which was hard. I also attended my usual Explorer Scout meeting on Monday night, lucky for me it was their Christmas party so I got to catch up some more with my fellow leaders and of course my Scouts. Being home reminded me of just how tiny Cádiz is, I was really glad to be reunited with my car, but it was strange not being able to just pop around the corner to a friend’s house or the supermarket if needs be.
